For those that like to fit a little more junk in their rear cargo area, a little more airbrushed wizard on their flanks, and a little less knockin' when the van is a-rockin'.
2023.06.06 05:08 Agitated_Shoulder667 My neighbors dogs live in his car
My neighbor moved in to our apartment building in March. The person in the building next door brought up to me that he hears dogs in his van at night alone when he walks his dog. I started to pay attention to it while I was out walking my dog and sure enough every time I could hear dogs barking or whining. His van is a branded dog training, breeding, boarding van (small van, smaller than a cargo). It started to get warm and we were concerned so we both called 311 (NYC non emergency) and each time they connected u to 911 and the cops came and apparently got in contact with him (didn't witness). This is obviously gone on for months but now that it's getting hotter its more concerning. We also were worried they were "boarding" people's dogs in a car and didn't have a proper facility.
SO today I realized his car was just running and keys were in ignition - this just seems careless and strange to me. So i call the phone number listed on the side of the van and I get a man who is surrounded by barking dogs in the background - clearly not the guy downstairs in his apartment with no dogs. I figure it's his boss- i tell him the situation and my concerns for the dogs safety. He tells me that it's his trainer and it's not any clients dogs its his dogs - that he just moved in with his girlfriend and dogs weren't allowed in the apartment. I know this isn't true as I have a dog so I know dogs are allowed in the apartment. I told him several people in the community are worried and its a bad look for his company, he says he is going to call the guy.
About 5 minutes later his girlfriend comes to my apartment BANGING on my door aggressively. I have never seen her since she moved in in March - I see her boyfriend all the time tending to the dogs in the car. She starts yelling at me asking why I'm calling the cops ALL the time on her boyfriend (I called 311 once and then the company number). I tell her it's not just me its a lot of people concerned. She tells me she is pregnant and doesnt want dogs around her - that they are their dogs but they keep them in the car and they live in there because they don't want them inside. That they are well taken care of they go out 3 times a day and are fed and giving water. That they pay for an expensive fan to keep them cool. The windows are blacked out so these dogs live in a dark small space in a van. I have seen inside while he is feeding them, they have 2 large crates. Note these dogs are cane corso's.
She starts crying talking about how hard her boyfriend works - he gets up at 6 am every morning to take care of the dogs and this is the only income for them and now he is at risk of losing his job. She tells me to mind my own business and leave them alone that essentially i am ruining her life. I tell her I never see them at the park even, when they get taken out where do they go? She told me I know nothing about dogs as I shouldnt be taking my dog to the dog park as it is unsafe and I'm a bad dog parent. I told her I meant the park as a whole, whatever I won't get in to that. It was a pointless fight where she turned everything around on me. Then told me they are working dogs that are trained to fight - (isn't this not helping her case...?) what is she going to do when she has a newborn? She told me its not going to change and to deal with it. She also asked me why I didn't confront them before caling the cops. They have had multiple screaming fights that have scared me and my partner and I brought that to her attention that they didn't seem approachable because of what we heard.
I now feel unsafe because I wanted to stay anon in all of this. I am a dog lover and animal advocate - i work with rescues we foster and adopt and I have cried on numerous occasions after coming inside and hearing these dogs in distress. It feels awful to ignore it but now at the way she lashed out and attacked me I'm nervous to do anything else and also don't feel safe in our space in the building.
What do i do?

2023.06.06 05:05 Background_Drama4056 Next Agent Teaser Breakdown
In this thread, I'll sum up every pixel of this agent teaser image
_\"Will stop you dead in your tracks and pull you in for a closer look\" - Riot Dev_ - The Black Coffee and Heart- shaped Waffles are hinting that the new agent is Norwegian, which lines up with the new emails from patch 6.11:
Email from Jett :
You wouldn’t believe what I hear these Kingdom employees talking about in line at the truck. No filter when you’re hungry I guess. I added some new menu items; the bulgogi torta was a hit. Today I overheard some goofballs chatting about cargo pickups in Norway, and something about “rad or four.” Look into it?
Shoot more customers at the window gotta go.
Kingdom Email :
Credentials of transit have been created in your name. After a security escort has been assembled, transport will contact you regarding the date, time, and point of embarkation. As this will be an out-and-back, packing overnight kit will not be necessary. Dress for inclement weather. Temperature at destination is minus two degrees Celsius, twenty-eight Fahrenheit. Save receipts per Landfall routing and submit for reimbursement upon return.

-The bottle on the left looks like spider silk based on the color and FYI spider silk is strong, which is expected if you want to pull humans -On the work area, the tweezers are in line with my theory that all their rope are made of spider silk, as you need them for harvesting and weaving the spider silk -In fact the most common spider found in Norway, has a tensile strength of 1 GPa and can stretch very long, before rebounding to its original length, kinda sus if you ask me -There is a test tube cleaner, and a small brush, not sure what to make of this but spiders are sometimes kept in test tubes -Its a screwdriver bro -The thing their working on the table right now looks like the other end of the small thing with white string, already completed on his desk -The blue thing is definitely more rope -The machine on the bottom looks like a electronic reel, which might pull the strings he is making -The People on the screen are probably members of the Landfall Project, I think they are either climbing a mountain or venturing into a ravine / cave for radianite and using the agent's rope and tech to do so
https://preview.redd.it/8pi2ekkf9b4b1.jpg?width=653&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c0dd6149387713232b2e7b89faa48e93698c7be - I have no clue what that photo is on the bottom - the thing on the left of the image looks like something mountable to the wall, and I think it's a rope u can attach anywhere / a zip-line - the white and grey things on the right must be connected to the machine I just mentioned, since they share a similar shape.
TL;DR:
New Agent is from Norway

2023.06.06 05:05 Telemachusfar The Human Security Officer, Part 6
Slightly longer one here, I think I like them this length. Anyway, as always, thanks for reading! :)
---
“I am unsure Miss,” Ton'et's central body turned somewhat and look of deep thought came over them, “wait… we’ve established that these three are not party with these Tinsne. They are wearing habsuits and have died more recently. At this time we have two questions. One, Where did these three come from? And two, What was that disturbance?” They looked at Penelope.
“…I’m not sure I’m following.”
“I’m suggesting that these two questions may have the same answer. The sound and jostling correspond with an airlock alignment and clamping sequence. I believe we have been just boarded by whoever sent these three here.”
“… Shit.”
“An apt Terran expletive.”
Ton’et noticed the human’s eyes tarry on the weapons crates but was surprised when she instead stood and moved to the doorway.
“Can’t do anything from here. Follow behind me and we`ll see what we’re dealing with. If something happens just hide and stay down.” Penelope let out a hollow chuckle.
“An expression of amusement? Why?” Ton’et asked as they moved to the airlock.
“Well, you wanted firsthand data on human biology, right? It looks like you’re gonna get it.” she said, moving to the door.
“I see… not quite what I had in mind Miss…”
Penelope gave Ton’et a wry smile as she waited for them to take a position behind the lip of the door. Pressing the button, the doors slid opened quickly but no one waited for them in the airlock itself and the doors to the Blue Nebula wouldn’t unlock until the outer door was closed. As such, the two moved in and again took up positions. Penelope at the door and Ton’et behind cover.
This time Penelope waited. Moving the side of her head up against the door and pausing for a moment. She then repeated the odd action lower on the door.
“What are you doing Miss Penelope?” Ton’et asked.
Penelope tapped the fleshy protrusions on her head, “Listening. There’s something mechanical on the other side of the door.”
“How can you… questions for later. It’s most likely a frame. There’s nowhere near enough folks turning to piracy to fill a crew so its not uncommon to see them using mechanical assistants.”
“Great…”
Really? Robots? A focus came over the human as she motioned for Ton’et to stay down. It almost scared them how her face changed expression. There was no smile anymore, and the eyes took on a deadly seriousness. They shuddered to think of themselves on the receiving end of this aura.
Having noted her companion’s hidden position Penelope took a deep breath and opened the door.
In an instant, it slid open and her target was in front of her. A machine about half her height with three leg-like appendages supporting a round body and atop that a cylindrical shaped head. A lens was looking down the hall to the cargo bay before it quickly refocused on the large creature surging forward from the airlock. A small laser weapon deployed from body but it had no time to fire as Penelope’s left hand gripped its head, lifted it into the air, and slammed it into the opposite wall.
Penelope had apparently used enough force to crush the thing’s head entirely as its body detached and fell to the floor. The shattered head only remained due to Penelope’s grip.
Oh… well then, that was… “Huh… I honestly thought that it would be a bit more durable.” She said as she looked at the crushed cylinder in her hand and then let it drop to the ground.
After a brief moment of shock Ton’et produced their datapad and began taking notes. Penelope noted that the rest of the corridor was clear and began making her way to the bridge.
“Bridge first, hopefully we can get a good idea of what we’re up against… and where everyone is.”
Ton’et made a gesture mimicking a nod and followed at a distance.
Reaching the turn in the corridor, Penelope peeked around the corner and saw that the bridge doors were wide open. It wasn’t a great angle, but she could see one frame of similar design past the open doors. Holding out a hand she motioned for Ton’et to stay put.
Ton’et was again surprised and made note of the near silence with which Penelope dropped low to the ground and made her way to the open bridge door. What was one frame from the angle of the corner revealed itself to be two frames and an alien in a familiar style habsuit.
Penelope was used to perfectly controlling her movements in regular gravity and with the ship operating on half that norm it was almost nothing to move with speed and silence. She moved past the first frame she’d seen which was evaluating the security console. Making sure not to alert that frame she moved up behind the alien and the frame it stood next to. They were apparently attempting to slice the console attached to Captain Deag’s chair. This task seemingly so engrossing that neither noticed Penelope taking a position directly behind them.
In a flash of motion she grabbed the alien by its habsuit with her left hand and the frame by its head with her right. In one fell motion she crushed the frame and whipped its body across the bridge into the second frame destroying them both. She turned the aliens face towards the pile of frame parts and then back to her.
“Call for help and I promise you, that habsuit wont even slow me down. Understand?” she said with a deathly growl, staring into its eye.
It began to shake in the suit and uttered a single wilting, “…yes.”
“Good. Now, you’re gonna answer some questions for me.”
Ton’et barely watched where they were walking as they moved onto the bridge. Tapping away at the data pad and muttering to themselves.
“Inquire about limits of superb strength. Inquire about ability to move silently despite size. Inquire about ability to launch objects at speed and with accuracy.” They continued as they moved into a corner and sat down.
The alien in Penelope’s grip noticed Ton’et but did nothing but shake in fear and wait for the questions.
“First. How many of you are there?” Her tone was cool and controlled.
“Five total now, thing on other ship got Mol, Vardin, and Eiggia. More frames. Me here, three others should be in cargo bay with your people, frames too. One left on our ship. Please don’t kill me.”
“Cooperate and I won’t harm a hair on your…” she noticed it was seemingly hairless, “Look, talk and you’ll be fine. Deal?”
It made a gesture that Penelope assumed was equivalent to a nod.
“Excellent. How many frames? And is everyone using energy weapons?”
“Ehrm, seven frames and…” It seemed to be confused about the second question, “energy weapons… yes? I am the only one not armed.”
“Last question. You have a means of communicating with your friends?”
The alien’s eye tarried to a belt on its suit. Hooked on it was a small round device.
“This?” Penelope grabbed the thing and held it up.
“Yes. Touch screen, speak.” It offered.
“No need.” She responded as she crushed it in her grip and let the pieces fall to the ground.
The alien made a kind of buzzing noise as it looked down at the crushed commlink.
“Now,” Penelope continued as she moved to a corner of the bridge, “you’re going to sit in this corner and do absolutely nothing because you know that if you try anything there is nowhere you can run that I cannot get to you, yes?”
It enthusiastically made its equivalent of a nod once again. Satisfied, Penelope set them down and turned to her security console. She readjusted its height to suit her and pulled up the corridor cameras and the cargo bay camera. What the little alien had said was true. The corridors were clear. There were three individuals with laser rifles and four more frames in the cargo bay. They’d gathered the crew back by the large bay door and were looking over the cargo.
“Ton’et, stay here and keep an eye on this one…,” she evaluated the situation, “and come over here. I think I have an idea you’ll like.
“Of course Ma’am.”
After explaining her little plan Penelope left Ton’et with the alien who, true to their word, made absolutely no movements save a little shaking. She made her way down the other corridor from the one they’d come through and overrode the locking mechanism on its airlock, ensuring no one would be joining the party… or leaving too early. Next, she went not to the door that led to the cargo bay but the engine room and its many maintenance tunnels.
---
Gareth had just met up with Deag and had begun to explain the situation when the pirate ship sent a warning signal and began boarding them. Docked as they were, there wasn’t much to be done to stop the vessel. They were quickly corralled together with the rest of the crew at the back of the cargo bay.
“Now I’m not sure if this is your first time but we’re not barbarians. Well take what we want, and you’ll be on your way. No harm done. Simple as that.” The leader explained to them. He was a sort of bright yellow and red insectoid, though it was hard to tell under the habsuit. He was just a hair taller than Gareth and sported bug-like wings from his back that the suit accounted for.
Gareth wanted nothing more than to yell, “I told you so!” but he would never admonish the captain in front of the crew. Besides, he had more pressing matters to think about. Like how to handle the fact that Penelope was currently on board the derelict ship seemingly with no idea they’d been boarded by pirates. He wasn’t sure what to do and couldn’t exactly discuss it with the captain lest their captors hear them. The captain was no doubt in the same position as he looked to Gareth. Unfortunately, neither of them were telepathic.
He could attempt to scare the pirates by telling them about Penelope but then they might be able to disengage the airlock and trap her and Ton’et on the other ship. That would not do at all, and they’d probably think he was just bluffing until they sliced the ships’ computers and saw proof of her identity. That said he was fairly sure that none of these pirates were fond of violence. Most just used the threat of it to get valuables and leave. It was mostly a calm affair compared to what he knew of ancient human piracy. He decided the best thing to do was just talk but not mention Penelope. He was good at talking and a better sense of these pirates would serve well.
“So, what happened exactly. I’m curious. We found three wearing similar habsuits to yours on that ship.”
“A question for a question. I answer that one and then ask one of my own. Fair?” the leader’s wings buzzed.
Gareth looked to Deag who just nodded, “Fine.”
“We found that ship not long before you, knew it was just us in the system so we checked it out. Sent the three over and then… nothing. Dead coms, life signs gone. Weren’t about to just give up on it and it presented us with an opportunity. We wait for another to check it out and either they go the same way as ours did in there and we loot their ship, or they figure out whatever happened for us and we take everything.”
“Ahh, so a trap. Just not one set by you.”
“I suppose. But now my question. You are alive so you managed to survive whatever was on the ship. What was it? What killed my people?”
Before he could respond, though, a familiar voice came over the ship’s intercom.
Ton’et!? “Hello pirates. This is… um well I suppose my name doesn’t really matter… well I’m here to give you a threat? Message? Kind of a request too to be honest. All three, yes… Anyway. Put down your weapons and surrender to the captain. That would be Captain Deag… The Corvul… oh gosh I’m really no good at this. Uhm, just surrender or else you’ll regret it cause our security officer Penelope is going to… do something that I’m of course not going to reveal to you. But its… bad, so you should really surrender. Ton’et out.” The intercom cut out abruptly.
“…What?” The pirate leader looked more confused than anything.
“They’re a scientist, not an orator. But you really should consider surrender because if Ton’et is on the bridge then Penelope must already be on her way here. You see what we found was an anti-personnel turret. A human weapons platform. We were able to deactivate it thanks to our new security officer. A human who, if I had to guess, is about to burst through one of those doors.”
The pirate leader wheeled around and aimed his rifle at one of the doors.
“Cover the doors!” he yelled.
The other two aliens and the four frames took aim at the two points of entry. The high pitched whine of charging laser weapons sounded from all of them.
“Keep aim. We know where its coming from and no personal shield could hold up under all our fire.”
They held but nothing happened. Gareth broke the silence.
“You know captain. There’s another human phrase I think you’d like. I think even a human would call you bat shit crazy sometimes. You know you really should look up some of those terms. Having Penelope hanging around.”
“I suppose I should?” Deag responded with a quizzical look.
“Silence you two!” the pirate said without averting his gaze from the doors.
“You really aught to LOOK them UP captain…” he repeated emphasizing the two words.
The captain suddenly understood what Gareth was trying to tell him and, as covertly as possible, glanced up to the ceiling of the cargo bay. Immediately his eyes shot back down as he witnessed perhaps the most terrifying sight of his life.
Even in the greys of his vision he could see, hanging from the crane attached to the tall ceiling of the cargo bay, their security officer. Penelope had apparently accessed one of the maintenance tunnels that Thwilll most often used and followed it to a hatch that let out in the ceiling. She had then, silently, swung her way across the support structure to the crane system that was used to move especially heavy cargo. Now, she hung from it with one arm as she gazed down at the unsuspecting pirates. All of whom were still solely focused on the doors.
“So that’s a no to the surrender?” Deag asked.
“Silence!” the bug yelled.
The final part of Penelope’s plan became apparent when everyone in the cargo bay was suddenly forced down into the floor. The bay’s gravity had just been jacked up to its maximum.
“AGH!” one of the pirates yelled as they were completely pinned to the ground.
A similar sound came from many as they all struggled against the force. The leader and the other alien managed to stay vertical but were clearly struggling to move. Even the frames struggled somewhat, clearly not built by a species that worked under such gravity.
Deag looked up with disbelief to see Penelope seemingly unaffected, still holding on to the crane with a single hand. She evaluated the situation for only a moment before simply letting go. Her massive form careened downward, taken quickly by gravity.
SLAM!
The resounding sound came as she landed on the floor. Her legs bent as they absorbed the impact. Rising to her full height she moved with incredible speed. Her hands shot out and grasped the two frames she’d landed between. With a twist of her torso and extension of her arms, she threw them into opposite walls. Still working off the shock, Penelope managed to surge forward and crush another frame under her foot. Its shell shattered as she put her full weight atop it.
Finally, the shock seemed to wear off and the pirates began to react. They moved sluggishly, though, their rifles more than doubling in weight. The leader attempted to take flight, but his wings did little more than buzz incessantly, not even lifting him from the ground. Penelope, however, moved with ease. Gareth could almost see relief in her eyes as she enjoyed the time under earth-like gravity. She dispatched the final frame without much of a show, simply reaching down and crushing its cylindrical head in her hand.
The leader gave up trying to take flight and the only other pirate not pinned to the ground managed to levy their rifle at Penelope who made no attempt to avoid it or take cover. The hot beam shot out and struck her center mass. Elation and then terror came over them as they celebrated striking the human only to see the sustained beam was having little effect. Penelope held its gaze as she calmly waltzed forward, ripped the rifle from the aliens’ hand, and snapped it in half over her knee. Tossing the two pieces to the ground she just palmed the alien’s face and sent them to join their broken toy.
With that she turned to the leader to see something that changed her demeanor entirely. The leader had aimed his rifle, but not at her. Instead, the emitter was pointed at Captain Deag. A storm came over her face.
“Stop, or he dies…” the leader warned.
“Now, now. We were playing by a certain set of rules, and I was happy to do so. You left them out of it, and I didn’t kill any of you. That was fine by me. But you’re about to change those rules,” her hand slowly lowered to the pistol that had remained unused at her side, “and I will play by them.”
“You’d risk his life to take mine?” the bug asked.
“Nope. Charge time on those rifles seems to be just over a second. That plus your piss poor reaction time and I’m fairly certain I could get off two, maybe three, shots before you fire. That’s one to disarm you, one to put you down, and one more just to be sure.”
The bug found only cold certainty in Penelope’s eyes as he tried to discern whether she was lying or not. He struggled to keep the weapon steady.
The rest of the bay was silent.
“You’re bluffing.” He said but wilted under her intense gaze.
“The question isn’t whether or not I’m bluffing. The real question is whether or not you’re willing to bet your life on that gamble. I wouldn’t.”
He felt so small under her gaze. His instincts screamed at him that this was no creature to trifle with. Those eyes burned into him and yet he felt nothing but a freezing sensation in his gut.
Don’t do it. The rifle dropped to the ground with a thud.
Good choice. ---

2023.06.06 05:02 brianddk Try Trezor-T Firmware on your laptop via the Trezor Emulator
This is VERY technical, and completely UNSUPPORTED. Please don't write support tickets. Just stay on this thread. Most might not know that Trezor maintains a Trezor-T emulator that runs on Windows, Linux or macOS. To use it, you have to build it from source, but if you are patient, and comfortable with compiling code, it isn't that hard.
Warning
This is a technical toy to try out features. DO NOT hold assets in the emulator. DO NOT put seed mnemonics in the emulator. DO NOT put passphrases in the emlator. It is also, AFAIK, totally unsupported. Don't log issues or complain if it's broke. Just nag on this thread if you need to vent. Learn about Testnet coins if you want to practice transactions. DO NOT put real coins on here
Windows
I'll start from Windows, since that is what I'm working in currently. This process is only marginally "Windows". It's actually something called WSL which is effectively Linux-on-Windows. Similar, perhaps to Andorid-on-ChromeOS, or similar type projects. WSL may "technically" be a container, but it integrates into Windows pretty seemlessly. Most might not even know.
Install WSL on Windows
Luckilly Microsoft has documented the hell out of this, so the HowTo is insanely detailed. You have to be running a fully patched version of Windows 10 or Windows 11. I'm running this on Windows 10 22H2, which most should be able to get. You will also need the "correct" processor. Since this does use some of the virutualization instruction set you need an Intel or AMD processor that supports it. Most do, but some VERY lean netbooks might not. Settle in, the HowTo could burn an entire afternoon of cross-linked articles and proceedures.
The default is to land Ubuntu 22.04, which is what I'm running. If you just want to run the emulator, that is about all you have to do. But if you want to run physical Trezor hardware under WSL you will need to toy around with usbipd. Since I wanted to play with physical hardware as a FIDO2 SSH keystore, I also needed HIDRAW support which entailed a kernel compilation. NOT required, but I'll leave it here if anyone is interested.
Linux / macOS
The offical documentation in the next section go into pretty good detail for how to spin up the Linux or macOS build environments. For WSL users, just follow the Ubuntu procedures from here on out. So what follows should match what both Ubuntu and WSL users experience. For macOS, it's likely pretty close, just with installations via brew instead of apt
Prepare the Build Environment
Honestly, if you landed WSL, then from here on out, you just pretend you are running Ubuntu 22.04. You drop into the WSL shell using the wsl command, but from there on out it's just normal Ubuntu. Here are the docs I referenced:
First we will need to install all the apt packages. My "all" may be overkill, but fresh installs are always missing a bunch of this.
sudo apt update sudo apt-get install scons libsdl2-dev libsdl2-image-dev llvm-dev libclang-dev \ clang build-essential trezor python3-pip python3-trezor python3-munch \ python3-venv librust-bindgen-dev protobuf-compiler python3-munch
Next we need to install poetry
python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip setuptools wheel python3 -m pip install poetry
Now we need to install rust
curl https://sh.rustup.rs -sSf sh source ~/.cargo/env rustup default nightly rustup update
Build the Trezor-T Emulator
Checkout a fresh copy of source. You can reuse the source, but it's MUCH easier with fresh source
mkdir -p ~/src/trezor-model-t/trezor-firmware cd ~/src/trezor-model-t/trezor-firmware git clone -b core/v2.6.0 --recurse-submodules https://github.com/trezotrezor-firmware.git . git checkout -b local/core/v2.6.0 poetry install poetry shell cd core make clean build_unix ./emu.py
You will get a freshly wiped Trezor-T window. Just click on the window where the touchscreen is displayed and it will by just like touch. You can play with the trezor.flash and trezor.sdcard files if you want, but I won't get into that here.
BONUS: Build Trezor-R Emulator
mkdir -p ~/src/trezor-model-trezor-firmware cd ~/src/trezor-model-trezor-firmware git clone -b python/v0.13.7 --recurse-submodules https://github.com/trezotrezor-firmware.git . git checkout -b local/python/v0.13.7 poetry install poetry shell cd core TREZOR_MODEL=R make clean build_unix ./emu.py
To operate the buttons on the Trezor-R emulator, you have to use the keyboard arrow keys. Left for the left button and Right for the right button.
Interacting with the Emulator
Most interfaces that connect to Trezor hardware can be convinced to connect to the emulator, but it might take some convincing. I found that TrezorCTL worked out of the box, and I saw that there were settings to allow trezor-bridge and trezor-suite to connect to it as well.
At your own risk
Please take heed and don't put your stash into a toy emulator. There are NO protections and the seed will be clearly visible in the filesystem when running the emulator. And NO, running it on Tails is no better. Hopefully this is plainly obvious to the most casual observer.

2023.06.06 04:57 MaIorbas Defending the Draft 2023: Los Angeles Chargers
Preface: There’s really no way to look back at the Chargers’ 2022 season without starting at the end. The team blew a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars in the wild card round in what can only be described as the peak of decades of cruelty by the football gods directed at the Chargers. In a year that began with Super Bowl aspirations thanks to an extremely talented on-paper roster, and included a regular season of injury after injury after injury (Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, etc.), the finale could not have been more crushing. Criticism and ridicule has rained down on head coach Brandon Staley and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi,
and the latter was promptly fired at the end of the season to the rejoicing of fans everywhere. But now we begin, again. The Super Bowl hopes are very much alive. The roster saw very few changes in free agency as the front office and coaching staff clearly believe the failure of the 2022 season was generally not an issue with the assembled players. But there is a much higher sense of urgency this year, and it’s not an exaggeration to say the team is going “all in” on the final cheap year of Justin Herbert’s rookie deal. Contracts have been structured in a way that will force significant cuts after the 2023 season just to get the team to salary cap compliance. This year may be do-or-die for both Tom Telesco and Brandon Staley.
Free Agency Recap
Losses:
G Matt Feiler, LB Drue Tranquill, EDGE Kyle Van Noy, QB Chase Daniel, CB Bryce Callahan, WR Deandre Carter, S Nasir Adderley, LB Troy Reeder, DL Breiden Fehoko, WR Michael Bandy, OT Storm Norton Five starters on this list: Feiler, Tranquill, Callahan, Carter, and Adderley. Letting Drue Tranquill leave is by far the most controversial decision here, especially since he ended up going to the Chiefs. He played very well last year, but seems like the idea here is that he was a factor in the defense’s struggle against the run. Feiler was a disaster last season after a great 2021, and Jamaree Salyer should be an immediate upgrade. Callahan is still a free agent and a reunion is not out of the question. Van Noy was great as a fill-in when Bosa was injured, but the team wants to get younger at the position. Carter was a quiet signing who outperformed his contract and provided much needed depth but again, too old. Adderley was benched in the season finale and then retired. The rest were backups and rotational players.
Additions: LB Eric Kendricks, DL Nick Williams That’s it, that’s the list. Eric Kendricks steps in as the starter next to Kenneth Murray who he can hopefully help mentor into being a good linebacker. And theoretically, he will be an upgrade in run defense over Drue Tranquill. Williams was signed after the draft as insurance for the injured Austin Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia. He may not make the team. The Chargers used most of the rest of their cap space re-signing free agents like Trey Pipkins, Morgan Fox, and Donald Parham. They still have about $12.5M to work with, pending the upcoming Justin Herbert mega-deal.
Draft Needs
WR: The trio of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Josh Palmer is one of the best in the league. However, with their contracts, there’s really no chance Allen and Williams will be Chargers in 2024. This group also lacks a speed element.
EDGE: Similar to WR, the starting duo of Bosa and Mack is elite but they are expensive and getting older. The depth behind them is just Chris Rumph.
TE: Gerald Everett is solid but on the last year of his deal. Donald Parham has potential but can’t stay healthy. Tre’ McKitty is a blocking TE who isn’t a very good blocker.
CB: JC Jackson is an enormous question mark, both from a health and performance standpoint. Michael Davis is a free agent after 2023. Ja’Sir Taylor is penciled in as the starting slot corner after very limited playing time last year.
OL: This is the strongest starting five the Chargers have had in a decade but the depth behind them both inside and out is weak.
LB: Eric Kendricks and Kenneth Murray will start, but Murray is auditioning to be on the team next year and Kendricks is old. The depth behind them is just Nick Niemann and Amen Ogbongbemiga.
S: JT Woods was a 2022 3rd round pick but barely played in 2022. Alohi Gilman stepped up when needed, but relying on him to start is risky.
RB: Austin Ekeler requested a trade, and even though it looked very unlikely to happen, the team needs to think about life after him in 2024. Neither Josh Kelley or Isaiah Spiller have shown they can handle a full workload.
KPR: With Deandre Carter’s departure, the team has no one with real return experience.
The Draft
1.21: Quentin Johnston - WR, TCU In hindsight, this pick should have been more obvious. The Chargers have been very strict about their size thresholds for wide receivers over the years, and despite countless debates about Johnston vs Zay Flowers vs Jordan Addison, the big guy from TCU won out. This was an immediately controversial pick among fans as many believed the speedy Flowers or the crafty Addison would be more suited to filling the biggest need in this position group: speed and separation. But while Johnston may not be your traditional deep threat, his game speed and GPS tracking data suggest a more dynamic skillset than he showed at the combine. And one area where he does beat those two guys that was probably overlooked as a need: run after catch ability. Johnston was elite at that in college, and that looks to be his primary role for the Chargers. New OC Kellen Moore will use him like he did Ceedee Lamb in Dallas. And since he will start the year at number three on the depth chart at best, he won’t be under pressure to carry the offense as a rookie while he learns from the veterans in front of him.
2.54: Tuli Tuipulotu - EDGE, USC After WR, the Chargers’ clear next biggest need was at EDGE and Tuli was the consensus best available. The team has also shown a penchant for drafting local kids from USC and UCLA over the last few years. He was extremely productive in his final season in college where he put up 13.5 sacks playing both on the edge and the interior. In the draft process, many people questioned if he would bulk up to be a full time DT or slim down to play the EDGE. It ended up being the latter as he weighed 266lbs at the combine. Tuli will provide valuable depth behind Bosa and Mack as a rookie, while also having the opportunity to play inside on passing downs like he did in college.
3.85: Daiyan Henley - LB, Washington State The Chargers lost two linebackers to free agency: Drue Tranquill and Troy Reeder. Tranquill was the team’s best coverage linebacker, and Reeder was key depth while also being a core special teams player. Enter Daiyan Henley, who could fill both of those roles by himself. With Kenneth Murray likely off the team in 2024, Henley has the opportunity to earn a starting job over the course of the season. He is a recent convert to the linebacker position and there is still much room for growth. At the very least, he will be an immediate special teams contributor. Staley and Telesco both raved about his prowess in that phase of the game after picking him.
*
4.125: Derius Davis - WR, TCU * Another TCU receiver! This pick was definitely a surprise, as many people projected him to be a late day 3 pick. But the Chargers coaching staff said after the draft that they believed he was the best return man available, and that they wanted to draft a starter in the 4th round. Davis was indeed one of the best returners in the country at TCU, and also can add some juice on offense even if he ends up limited to a gadget role. Either way, here’s some killer speed for the Chargers offense.
5.156: Jordan McFadden - OL, Clemson In the last few drafts, the Chargers have shown a lot of love for late round tackle-to-guard converts. Jamaree Salyer was the steal of the 2022 draft in the sixth round. McFadden played both tackle and guard in college on both sides of the line, and some scouts believe he may even be able to play some center. For the Chargers he will compete with Brenden Jaimes for the swing guard role, and maybe even push Foster Sarrell to be the swing tackle. Key depth for a position group that needed it.
6.200: Scott Matlock - DL, Boise State Matlock is a solid run defender with some pass rush upside who will get to learn behind a strong trio of veteran starters. And with Austin Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia both rehabbing major knee injuries, he may end up seeing some decent playing time this season. I’m very intrigued by his upside, and Staley has a good track record of getting good play from late round DTs.
7.239: Max Duggan - QB, TCU The Los Angeles Horned Frogs are ready to take the NFL by storm in 2023 (hopefully to face the Philadelphia Bulldogs in a championship rematch). The Chargers historically have carried three QBs on the active roster, and with only two signed going into the draft, it seemed like a strong possibility they would pick one. So here’s Max Duggan, who despite leading TCU to the Natty was generally not loved by scouts. He has a ton of athletic ability but the finer points of playing QB need to be worked on. There is absolutely potential to be a long term backup to Justin Herbert though, if he can beat out Easton Stick.
Notable UDFAs Jerrod Clark - DL, Coastal Carolina: Most people expected Clark to be drafted, and the Chargers gave him a lot of money for a UDFA. I would not be surprised at all to see him make the roster as an additional run defender.
Cam Jones - CB, Ohio State: Another guy who could have been drafted, there are depth spots at corner up for grabs and Jones is an intriguing option.
Tiawan Mullen - CB, Indiana: Mullen used to have a pretty high draft stock but fell hard in the process. The Chargers are thin at slot corner and he could earn a role.
Mikel Jones - LB, Syracuse: There’s a wide open competition for ILB5 that will most likely be decided by special teams.

2023.06.06 04:52 campbejk94 What famous (or would-later-be-famous) passengers do you know of?
When liners met disaster (cough,
Titanic, cough) anyone on them who was well-known was guaranteed a lot of publicity, although it likely didn't help your image or career much if you were dead.
When it was the only way to travel, the famous travelled on liners all the time, but didn't need to succumb to hypothermia or some other gruesome cause just to get their names in the papers. The press was usually there when liners (at least the most luxurious ones) departed or arrived to document the comings and goings of the rich and famous, proving that
paparazzi are not a modern invention. Newspapers would list all the first class passengers arriving.
Sometimes public figures might take one of the lesser-known ships, maybe even to avoid the public eye. And of course some liners transported people who later became famous, but who got clean away with it because nobody knew who they were yet.
Wikipedia articles on liners are an interesting source for trivia like this. Someone who has taken the trouble to research and write a good article and has interest in a ship, or a line, will sometimes uncover some interesting factoid, and boom, thanks to the miracle of the internet, there it is for all to read. The articles on the legendary superliners contain lots of information about who in the Who's Who travelled on them, and when. And of course the story of Charles Dickens' utter disenchantment with Cunard's
Britannia is now the stuff of legend. That's the low hanging fruit in the orchard.
What cases of the famous (or would-later-be-famous) travelling on specific ships that might not even be known of today (outside the liner enthusiast community) are you aware of? Here are a few I found:
Winston Churchill when a twenty-year-old junior officer, travelled to and from America on Cunard's
Etruria in 1895 en route to Cuba to observe the locals' fight to free themselves from Spanish rule.
Mark Twain travelled from Australia to Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) on P&O's
Oceana in 1895.
King George V and Queen Mary, while still the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, used Orient Line's
Ophir as a royal yacht for a tour of the British Empire in 1901 (the centrepiece of which was their attendance at the opening of Australia's first federal parliament in Melbourne). The tour lasted from February to November.
Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and Mary Pickford (possibly the first Hollywood "power couple") travelled on Red Star Line's
Lapland on their European honeymoon in 1920. They might have preferred one of the big first-class liners, but at the time
Mauretania, Aquitania, and
Olympic were probably all undergoing postwar refits and if you wanted to travel, you had to take what was going. Fairbanks would also later travel on
Belgenland. Isaac Asimov (at the age of three, before he became Sir Isaac) immigrated to the United States with his family on RMS
Baltic in 1923.
Albert Einstein liked Red Star ships, travelling on
Lapland and
Belgenland (possibly because Antwerp was closer to where he worked and lived in Stuttgart than Hamburg or Bremen was). He also travelled to New York on Holland America's
Rotterdam in 1921, to attend a World Zionist Organization conference. He was returning to Europe on
Belgenland in 1933 when he received word of the ascension to power of the Nazi Party in Germany, and instead of returning to his home (which had already been seized), he went to London from Antwerp to seek refuge.
Eleanor Roosevelt with two of her sons and some friends returned from Europe on
Belgenland in 1929. Her husband, then Governor of New York State, met the ship with a motorcycle escort.
The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII, crossed the Atlantic on
Berengaria for a mostly unofficial visit to the US and Canada in the mid-1920s, and returned on
Olympic (this is from
The Only Way to Cross, by John Maxtone-Graham). HR also used Canadian Pacific ships (notably
Empress of Australia) for visits to his Canadian property as well.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth travelled to Canada on
Empress of Australia for the 1939 Royal Tour of Canada, also making an official visit to the United States, and returned on
Empress of Britain.
Eddie van Halen emigrated to America with his family as a boy on Holland America Line's
Rijndam.
George Bernard Shaw travelled extensively, and treated himself and his wife to a round-the-world cruise on Canadian Pacific's
Empress of Britain in the early December 1932-April 1933, and New Zealand the following year, often working on his writing during long voyages.
Henry Ford made a voyage to Europe on
Majestic in 1928, although as a teetotaler he probably would have been just as happy on
Leviathan.
Grace Kelly travelled on the
Constitution when she travelled from New York to Monaco for her marriage to Prince Rainier in 1956.
Former President Harry S Truman and his wife, Bess, travelled on the
Constitution returning from a European trip in 1958.

2023.06.06 04:49 waynerad GeniusTrip.AI -- Use AI to plan your vacation
It asked me where I wanted to go. I put in "Mons, Belgium", because, why not?
It asked for travel dates. I said July 12 to July 27 of this year. Nice 2-week vacation.
It said "Choose your budget." Options were: low, medium, high, and luxury. I chose "low". Though I'll bet Mons, Belgium is a place where you could do "luxury".
It said "Choose your vacation type." Options were "Relaxed" and "Packed". I picked "Packed". (Can you actually picture me relaxing?)
It said "Choose your category." Options were "Romantic", "Adventure", "Touristic", "Party", "Family", "Cultural", "Mixed". I picked "Adventure", though I was tempted by "Party".
It said, "Choose your dietary preference." Options were "Vegan", "Vegetarian", "Pescatarian", "Halal", and "No preference". I picked "No preference". Vacation isn't the time to be picky, right?
Never heard of the word "pescatarian" before but the "fish" icon makes me think it means fish.
Anyway, I clicked "Submit".

Weirdly, it cut off that last entry. I assume back to the airport for the flight back.
Also weirdly, it thinks I want to eat at Le Pain Quotidien every day. Which actually means "The Daily Bread" in French. The bread must be just ridiculously awesome?
It does look like the trip ought to be rather low cost, with lots of walking and biking and the occasional train. Some of the attractions look like they're low-cost, like biking in nature, visiting churches and parks and gardens. Some might be expensive like art galleries. Most of the cost, though, probably just goes to getting a hotel that is so close to the center of the city. I suppose it's worth it to get so much within walking distance.
No idea how this system works. I'm guessing it's using a generative AI model, but what it generates is based on a database of destinations and attractions and is shoe-horned into the format of a trip plan. Wonder if they trained a model from scratch or fine-tuned a model from somewhere else.

2023.06.06 04:11 khoafraelich789 Here Are the 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy Right Now
📷
The days of the sub-$10,000 new car are long behind us, and the days of the sub-$20,000 new car may not be far behind. But if a rock-bottom base price is what you’re looking for, a variety of models still deserve consideration. Many of them also get good gas mileage, which will help keep a lid on ownership costs for as long as you own one.
To help with your cheap-car search, we rounded up the 10 least expensive new cars. They’re ordered by base price from least to most expensive, and all prices include the destination charge, but not any cash incentives or taxes and fees. To make the list useful to as many car shoppers as possible, all prices include an automatic transmission, which bumps the price for some models that otherwise offer a manual. For cars with more than one transmission choice, the EPA-estimated combined mpg rating is for the automatic version.
Cheapest New Cars
- 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage ES: $17,650
- 2023 Kia Rio LX: $17,875

2022 Mitsubishi Mirage Manufacturer image
Topping the list of most affordable cars, the Mirage is a subcompact hatchback with seating for up to five. The combination of a tiny 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and optional continuously variable automatic transmission deliver impressive EPA-estimated gas mileage of 39 mpg combined, but it comes at the expense of performance; the Mirage is slow. That said, we thought it was reasonably fun to drive when we last reviewed it. In 2021, the Mirage got a refreshed face and revised rear bumper, an updated interior with new soft-touch materials, a new standard 7-inch touchscreen and standard safety features including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection across all trims. If you want a trunk, Mitsubishi also offers a sedan variant called the Mirage G4; with the CVT, it starts at $18,500.
2023 Kia Rio LX Price: $17,875 ($1,125 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 36 mpg
📷
2023 Kia Rio Manufacturer image
The Kia Rio enters the 2023 model year largely unchanged. Under the hood is a 120-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and standard CVT for a generous combined fuel economy rating of 36 mpg. An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia display with a rear camera and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard across the lineup; unfortunately, automatic emergency braking is unavailable until you move up to the Rio’s higher trim, the S.
2023 Nissan Versa S Price: $18,595 ($1,095 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 35 mpg
2023 Nissan Versa Manufacturer image
The Nissan Versa is packed with active-safety and driver-assist features you don’t often see at this price. These include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, reverse automatic braking, lane departure warning and high-beam assist. It’s also fitted with convenience features like cruise control, automatic headlights, push-button start and Bluetooth streaming audio. For 2023, the Versa gets an updated front end and adds optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the base S model. Under the hood of the Versa S is a 122-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an optional CVT; the CVT is standard on higher trims.
2023 Kia Forte LX Price: $20,815 ($1,125 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 34 mpg
📷
2022 Kia Forte Manufacturer image
The Kia Forte’s base LX model (formerly called the FE) returns for 2023 with no changes aside from the new name. The most affordable trim is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and mated to a CVT. The compact sedan offers a commuter-friendly 34 mpg combined and is loaded with standard features such as a large 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and automatic emergency braking. Although the Forte is a good value for a daily driver, shoppers looking for plentiful cargo space won’t find it in this sedan’s small trunk.
2023 Hyundai Venue SE Price: $20,985 ($1,335 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 31 mpg
📷
2023 Hyundai Venue Manufacturer image
The Hyundai Venue makes the cheapest cars roundup as a faux SUV (i.e., it looks like an SUV and Hyundai calls it that, too, but all-wheel drive is unavailable, so we’ll leave it off the category). Advanced standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, and a driver attention monitor. All models are equipped with 8-inch touchscreen displays with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; the base SE and mid-level SEL have wireless versions of both, too. Power for all versions of the Venue comes from a four-cylinder engine paired to a CVT. For 2023, the Venue gains a standard rear occupant alert system and a larger 4.2-inch instrument cluster.
2023 Nissan Sentra S
Price: $21,145 ($1,095 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 33 mpg

After a complete overhaul for 2020, the Sentra is more than just a bargain buy thanks to styling improvements and a tech-focused interior. Powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to a CVT, the Sentra S gets a combined fuel economy rating of 33 mpg. The compact sedan provides a controlled, comfortable ride with sharp steering, but the CVT lacks the giddy-up of those in some competitors. Standard on the S are a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite of advanced safety tech, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear automatic braking and rear cross-traffic alert.
2023 Kia Soul LX Price: $21,215 ($1,325 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 30 mpg

2023 Kia Soul Manufacturer image
Kia’s quirky, utilitarian Soul hatchback sees a handful of changes for 2023, including an updated front and rear end, new 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, and a suite of standard safety and driver-assist features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure steering assist, driver attention warning, lane departure warning and a rear occupant alert. Power for all models comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT. The LX gets an 8-inch touchscreen display (other models get a 10.25-inch touchscreen) with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
2024 Chevrolet Trax LS Price: $21,495 ($1,095 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 30 mpg

2024 Chevrolet Trax Manufacturer image
The redesigned 2024 Trax grows more spacious inside and gets a new turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine under the hood, which it shares with the larger Chevy Trailblazer and related Buick Encore GX. But while the Trailblazer and Encore GX offer available AWD and make our list of cheapest SUVs, the Trax is now FWD-only. The Trax’s tech upgrades include a larger 8-inch center touchscreen and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity; it also adds standard Chevy Safety Assist, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure steering assist with lane departure warning, and forward collision alert.
2023 Hyundai Elantra SE Price: $22,065 ($1,115 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 37 mpg
📷
2022 Hyundai Elantra Manufacturer image
Car shoppers on a tight budget will be happy to learn that Hyundai completely redesigned the Elantra for the 2021 model year with a more refined powertrain and a larger interior, and the 2023 model returns largely unchanged. The Elantra is available only as a sedan, and the most affordable SE trim is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a capable CVT. The Elantra gets an impressive 37 mpg that makes it as budget-friendly to own as it is to buy, and standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a blind spot warning system and lane-centering steering. Shoppers who can overlook the sedan’s low-rent interior will appreciate the Elantra’s value.
2023 Subaru Impreza Base Price: $22,115 ($1,020 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 32 mpg
📷
2023 Subaru Impreza hatchback and sedan Manufacturer image
The 2023 Subaru Impreza offers the choice of a sedan or five-door hatchback variant, and the sedan brings the lower price tag of the pair. Under the hood is a 152-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an optional CVT that is good for an EPA-rated 32 mpg; AWD comes standard across all trims. On the tech front, the base Impreza’s center touchscreen measures 6.5 inches and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Models equipped with the CVT also pack important standard safety and driver-assist features: In addition to a rear seat reminder, Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite bundles automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and lane departure steering assist.

2023.06.06 04:06 Nomyad777 [PI] The Monster Kingdom (2/2)
Part 1 "When we Firmas were pushed north into the Pyrimian mountain valley after the death of their chain of command, they settled down and instead of focusing on expansion focused on necessities like food. With co-operation from the first goblins and other creative minds that joined the First Wave of the migration, they managed to grow food over the summer in first-iteration greenhouses. "My parents were part of the first wave. They were old for a couple, but joined the Firma clan in founding a government and keeping the area safe, as well as spreading word. The dragonic gods didn't like their behavior at all; cities burning is more entertainment for them, so they were the first to be Forsaken in this era, publicly, in the main square of the old Dragonic Capital. "However, that backfired, with more and more dragons tired of running around and fighting all the time, they decided to settle down in a place where nobody would bother them; now that they had this place given to them, and the Second Wave started. Basically the entirety of the dragonic clans and several other species amassed in this wave, and the Sapient Unification Government held. "My parents had an egg in one of the more northern caves, right on the coast. Then, the third wave arrived and everything went downhill from there. "The Unification Wars were fought between those who wanted one government to cover this region, and those who wanted governments segregated by species. This would have been fine if the secessionists didn't step in on people's behalves, without their consent; it took fifteen years of war for the war to end. Millions died and some species like the Snow Fox beastpeople almost went extinct. My parent were part of the death wave. "The war evolved so rapidly it was impossible for a commander to last more than two months. It started with sticks and stones and within a month there were arrow volleys. A year saw guns, two tanks, three battleships, four planes. Bombs, bigger bullets, bigger guns, bigger bombs. "In the last few months of the war, the first nuclear devices were used, creating miniature stars on the land with immense destructive potential unleashed. It ended with mutually assured destruction protocols being activated, and when all was said and done the land was a snow-fallen irradiated dustball. "It took years for the survivors to pick up the remnants of our short-lived civilization and restart it into the Terra Firma Sapience Union. All the time, my egg didn't hatch because I had no incubator, but didn't die thanks to my ice type. It was located close enough to a mana vein where I just... absorbed the entire vein. When the cave was found by explorers following maps for my parents den, all they found was my egg glowing brighter than Sunstones. "I was taken to an incubation facility in Cellyia, one of the bigger cities. There I hatched, and after more than one test I grew. My growth was still... affected by the time without an incubator, so my already slow growth stopped after fifty years instead of continuing to infinity. And then I took some magic courses, did my best to drain my mana reserves, and settled down here, well away from... the bustle of Cellyia. It never quite felt like a home, you know. It was a good place to grow up, don't get me wrong, but I like it here better. Remote, and in the same place my parents met for the first time. As much as I can tell, anyway; a number of records were destroyed in the Unification War. "When your heroes continued to come up here, I would be the one on first guard. Damming a river, I used water magic to break it. Trying to destroy some transit infrastructure, I would be the first one to either fake it, finish it off, or lure them away. When your latest one decided to head for Cellyia, it was out of my range for such activities. I shadowed the party on the way and let others take care of it. "I never thought that your 'heroes' would be heartless enough to burn what they were told and even acknowledged as a hospital with patients inside. A library and museum with most of our pre-unification works inside. An orphanage, a school... an entire neighborhood of ten thousand citizens' homes. What for? To try to kill just one of us. "We... couldn't take that kind of behavior. Cellyia might have not been the best place for someone with my personality to grow up, especially without parental figures, but that orphanage still had some good memories. An all-citizens vote was called, an all-citizens vote was passed, and we started a counter-offensive military campaign into your Civilization Nations. We've been waiting for you elves, leaders of the Civilized Nations, to advance your society; it's been seven hundred years, all the most you've done is grow your population and add an extra floor to your townhomes. "So we're going to do it for you. You ran our patience down, so we're going to change your society for you. Is it a repeat of the Unification War? I don't think so, given that you Civilized Nations never rescinded the declaration of war against us 'monsters' over two thousand years ago; one that you still follow through on to this day. "But that isn't the end of my story. "When the gods forsook us, they tried to pry away our magic, our land, and our lives. So we defended. Space radars monitor their movements on the mortal plane. There's so many more technical details I can go into. All I can tell you is, at one point, the old god of Dragonic Princess-kidnapping; yes, they were a god; they came and asked us to restart worshiping them. "That went over as well as you'd expect, and the next thing that happened... was that I absorbed her mana and powers. Technically, I am an undefined god, and... at this point, I'm afraid to get a definition. "What if it's something I don't like? Something evil, immoral... something my parents, the leaders of the Second Wave, wouldn't be proud of? What if... what if it kills me? Everyone hates me? I'd no longer be free... "So my solution was to hide. Here, in a mountain cave in the middle of nowhere. This is my life, all of it... and I don't know where to go from here." ----- "So... you're a god?" I asked. I couldn't think of another question to ask. "Yes and no." The cat replied. It did nothing to satisfy my fearful curiosity. How could one both be and not be a god? "Princess-kidnapping was a... niche god, rarely prayed to by still enough to be, you know, and actual deity. So her mana ran out first, and most of it dissipated back into the environment yada yada yada, but like the sponge my mana reserves are, I sucked more of it up than I should have; enough to had just a slight touch of divine control. On par with a low-level demigod. If I was omnipresent, I'd solve me problems with a snap of my claws, and then I wouldn't be hiding from my problems here." "If your powers came from a god, how are yours undefined?" My mind was seeking knowledge now. I was a mage, after all, and this was more than just the opportunity of a lifetime; it was the opportunity of a aeon. "Because I absorbed her essence from the environment before it had the chance to fully dissipate, but still late enough where it was no longer hers." Vixie shrugged "Or something like that, mana gets weird sometimes. All that matters now is my stockpile is slowly increasing its grow rate, which gets annoying pretty fast." "Annoying?" The cat laughed again. "Do you think this is all of my baseline reserve? Half of the reason I stay away from the rest of society is because the last time someone with multiple aura got involved with politics..." She trailed off, and then let another, this time impeccably cast illusion fall. The air around her was burnt crisp with the power of several mandatory auras in her current small size. Twelve tails flicked behind her back, eleven of them made of energy. Floating specs of light, some smaller while others the size of ice crystals surrounded the air around her. The six orbs on her back were joined by six more, and were attached to a ring. Her head had two halos, and her entire body was engraved with glowing lines. If she before radiated power, now she was made of it. The lights on the cave's ceiling flickered as more and more of the illusion fell away. Geometric shapes orbiting her body, a platform made of mana at her feet, lightning whizzing between all sorts of objects. Finally, it was gone, and the cat that stared at me with big, sad, glowing blue eyes had told me her deepest secret. As soon as it had started, the illusion repaired itself, and before me was one cat, a halo, six orbs, two crystals, and two mana tails. I did the second most instinctive thing when it came to seeing a cat. I pulled her in for a hug. There was a quickly quieted hiss as she squirmed a bit in my grip, trying to get more comfortable, before letting herself get stroked by me. Several images flashed before my eyes, and a tear came out of mine. We had gone to war against the less lucky sapients on our world, and were now paying the price. It felt like hours, but then my stomach growled, reminding me I hadn't eaten in literal days. Vixie shot out of my grip and led the way down into the cave. I followed, and soon enough I was eating some salted crackers with dried meat and cheese while Vixie moved around between other caves. "What are you doing?" I asked her between bites. "Packing," She replied. "Why?" "It's time I got out of here and, to follow the phrase, touched some grass." ----- It took three days for the elf, whose name was Nick, to recover enough to be able to make the journey to Cellyia. In those three days, I realized just how - and why - the Civilized Races looked at us the way they did. For starters, I'd forgotten just how many things ran on electricity, let alone other, more complicated mechanics. Pressurized water, instant hot water, even sinks, showers, and toilets were all completely unknown to the 'civilized races.' Ah, yes. Civilized without toilet paper. Bitter ramblings about the people who set off the chain reaction of events that killed my family aside, those were the second longest three days of my life; the first was my thirteenth birthday so I could get a personal HUD and social media. I was also a mess of thoughts. The elf had shown me, over the course of the three days - aside from the two-minute get-my-life-together moment - that I couldn't hide from my problems forever, or they would team up and try to hunt me. Hence my new, reluctant guest from the overflowing hospital they had oh-so-nicely delivered to my door. I had words for the medical staff. And I was also a mess of thoughts. Did I mention that one already. In all seriousness, Nick adapted to electronics pretty well. All I had to do was explain what it was, what it did, and file it under the name of science. It took an impressive four minutes of rambling about quantum mechanics before Vick realized that he was in way over his head asking how the 'magic rock that can half-think with bottled lightning' worked. He backed out when I yanked a textbook from my knowledge hoard and flipped through the pages to the start to explain how quantum superposition affected the set of particles it was entangled to. Fun. Finding out what toothbrushes were took some convincing, but soon the elf's teeth started to recover from lack of proper dental care. Food was easier than I expected, and Vick was pretty accepting of whatever I tossed on his plate. Except for artichokes, for some reason he hated those. Over the three days we bonded, and Nick got pretty used to life in my home. On the second day I moved him to the guest bedroom I had built but never maintained, but one wave of my paw and a splurge of magic later that was solved. "Why don't you use magic more often?" Nick asked. I explained that was much as I wanted to burn my reserves like they were a forest before a forest fire, the mental strain was tough without learning proper casting, which requires one to drain their reserves to practice wielding physical willpower. That meant that I was caught in an infinite loop of negativity, so I could only get away with a couple spells a day before the mental exhaustion metaphorically turned my brain to mush. On the morning of the fourth day, we left. Honestly, Nick could have left on the first day but I wanted him to be able to have the stamina to walk around for hours on end with me in Cellyia. Either way, as long as he kept by me it would be fine. There was a small population of elves, humans, and dwarves who had come up to the TFSU for one reason or another and never left, which meant that he wouldn't be too far out of place. My plan, instead of just flying into the Cellyia while steering clear of the airport, was to make it to the closest town, Lymian, and take a train from there north to Union Station. It would dump us a bit further downtown than I liked, but Cellyia was built in levels, and I could take the footpath level to wherever I needed. All said and done and one passenger seat clipped to my saddlebag harness on my dragon form, I opened the door to my cave. And was promptly blocked by a wall of snow. "Right," I half-grumbled. I enjoyed tunneling through snow, but spray would make the entrance cave wet and that wouldn't dry for another couple days, and until it did the sound of drips would echo throughout my home like nothing else. Either way, checking one last time that Nick was secure, I prepared my wings and powered forward. The snow and ice parted for me, and then melted and fixed itself back together behind me as I power-swam through the snow the same way I would through water. After ten seconds of this, I burst up from the snow-covered mountain the snowstorm had left behind and started to change my heading for Lymian. It would take thirty minutes of flying to get there, as I was flying lower and slower than usual to take care of my passenger, but we soon enough turned the next mountain and saw the town. The elf gasped as he took in the sights, while I kept my eye out for more activity. It had been fortified as a military base due to the war, but not by much; the town was useless from a defensive standpoint anyway. I spotted the next train arriving from its winding track around the next mountain, which also meant that I was a bit early. The citizens of Lymian were used to my presence, as I usually stopped by to pick up supplies and occasionally a bit of correspondence. So when I landed on top of a several story tall snow pile, nobody cared. I let Nick out, and then transformed into my cat form and slid down the snow pile to start to jogging towards the train station. That's when I remembered that unlike me, elves without snowshoes do not float on snow. Oops. ----- The sights were more than pretty, more than beautiful... If the gods had rejected these people, they might have just as well done it out of jealousy. After I'd been dropped off on top of a snow mound, I immediately flattened myself on my stomach to not fall through. I'd been in more than enough snowstorms and snow mounds to know how it would go if I didn't. The cat climbed the hill below me, reappearing as naturally as the snow fell. "Sorry," Vixie apologized. "Here, let me..." I felt the snow melt around me and we descended down to the ground. Vixie glowed brightly, literally; Even using as little magic as reshaping some snow was threatening to cascade out of her form. We moved to the train station without incident, where the massive 'train cars' were loaded full of passengers and cargo and then taken off towards the big city. Apparently this was the same one the hero burned, but the 'rebuilding and recovery efforts we going well; no critical infrastructure had been severely damaged.' Either way, the ride there was uneventful. Stepping out into Union Station was different. It was like I had entered a busy capital marketplace or square, with everyone rushing in another direction to another place. I trailed after Vixie, where even the oddity of an elf in these mountains was outshone by just how many different races there were; beastkin and kobolds and orcs and undead all filled the streets in, well, peace. "The city is built in layers," Vixie explained. "So while yes, residential and office towers here in the capital were set alight, underground public transit, personal transit, and cargo and fluid transit was all untouched, so we were able to circle around the hero and put out the fires to be replaced with smoke generators, and a couple holograms snatched from a nearby cargo transport." I had no idea what any of that meant, only that the city also had extensive underground bits. The towers soared over everything, and lights covered every spare centimeter of the city. Vixie led me down market stalls, across plazas, through parks and through building lobbies. Eventually, the babble increased, something I didn't think was possible. "Welcome to the commercial district," Vixie said after she had pulled me into a corner away from the masses of people and crowds moving around. "We're right near the harbor, and when we get there I'm going to show you the lighthouse and explain the city a bit better." I almost lost track of Vixie as we continued to move through the throngs of people going about their daily lives. I saw a couple boarded up shops, but most of them were either undamaged or didn't care about the scorch marks on their shops. Jewelry boutiques and grocery stores lived in tandem with furniture stores and a massive slab of too-smooth-to-be-natural stone of a rock type I had never seen before. It was covered in signs depicting some kind of diagram. Right around the corner was the waterfront, with a massive promenade running alongside it. Snow-covered trees lined the walkways, and soon enough Vixie and I came out of the crowd near a large, tall abandoned - though no unmaintained - building. "Right then," Vixie explained and started climbing. "Here's the old lighthouse, it's perfect for seeing the city. They never officially decommissioned it, so it's still legal to climb and properly maintained, but they never use it either." "What was the large thing they were building?" I asked, clambering onto the next ladder. "That? Oh, that was the space elevator." Vixie replied. "The ground part has been completed for three years now, we're just waiting for the rest of the nanotubes to make it into orbit and then run a kevlar cord up, follow it down with the space-grade heavy-duty nanotube cord, and then that's that." "Space?..." I was confused. "When the gods said that they were higher than mortals, you took that both figuratively and literally; they live above you and in a higher dimension. In this case, space is where they live in terms of height, but not number of dimensions. We're working on interdimensional travel, and interuniversal too, but those aren't replicatable on any sort of large scale yet." Vixie shrugged. "Either way, it's not like I care." "But you have it?" I pressed. "Dimensional travel." "Yes." She replied. "Well," I let out a short laughed. "The Civilized Nations are screwed over." "That's putting it lightly," She climbed on top of the last platform and showed me the city against the setting sun, lit up brighter than the night sky and more lively than the earth. It was beautiful. I sat there and watched the city glow with a power not even the gods had, side by side with not a dragon or monster, but a friend.
END. A/N: Rushed this last bit of the arc, but school is ramping up at the end of the year so it was either fast story or incomplete story, and I chose fast story. Happy pride month, everyone, and I hope to see more of you when I have more time. Original Prompt: [WP] For as long as all the races have known, Dragons have been seen as violent, destructive creatures. After an attack on your village, you black out and find yourself in the den of a dragon. It's rather annoyed that that is how they're seen, and wants to prove that isn't the case. u/Lycan_Jedi thank you for the prompt!

2023.06.06 04:04 Lyrabelle Anyone Else Treatment Resistant?
Hey, y'all. Was just wondering if anyone else is considered "treatment resistant." I understand that not every treatment is for everyone and sometimes things take a while, but I've literally had my practitioners say that I'm not responsive. Like, literally spoke with my emergency contact and was like, "She's just using the techniques we're teaching her to pretend she's okay."
So, over the last three years, I've had:
Inpatient care, Intensive outpatient care, 8 therapists, EMDR, Brainspotting, CBT, DBT, Group therapy, Narrative therapy, Occupational therapy, Family systems therapy, Gestalt therapy, Yoga, 20+ medications over a year.
Working on increasing communication between the two brain halves. This is intended to be achieved through verbally expressing emotion.
I have Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown and have read The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk.
Biofeedback seems interesting.
Oy... anybody relate?

2023.06.06 03:54 Dreadweasels Australian M113AS4 'Ute' variant in use in Ukraine.
| This photo I found on a news page shows off one of the better variants of the M113AS4 we have. The utility variant is actually quite liked by our army as it provides much more functional use than the APC variants. The flatbed can be used to move palletised cargo, or really any cargo, or if the Ukrainians freaky want to get wild they could possibly even strap some cannons on the back and go all MTLB/100mm combo with them! Frankly the APCs are holdovers until we get whichever IFV we will have. We'll then look to turfing the old APCs or concerting more into these utility concepts. Anyway, just really glad to see them in action and doing their part. Slava Ukraini and give those Ruzzian bastards hell! submitted by Dreadweasels to ukraine [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 03:30 yamasashi Fleet advice wanted
Hi, I'm a fairly new player having started from early March. So far I've spent a bit in SC and am looking for some advice/suggestion in rounding out my fleet. The ships I own right now are:
- MSR: Mainly used as a daily driver and to ferry refined goods to TDD to sell
- Prospector: making money with mining, no surprises there
- Nomad: this one I actually don't really fly all that much. Upgraded from a Fury and intend to use it for upgrade later on
- Mustang Alpha: game pack, same deal with the Nomad minus the intention to upgrade.
- Vanguard Sentinel: for bounty hunting. Love this thing.
- C1 Spirit: future daily drivesmall volume hauler. Can consider upgrading to E1 if that ship is interesting or if passenger gameplay gets implemented.
I'm thinking of some options as followed:
- Upgrading the MSR to C2: heavily considering this option. I love the idea of owning a C2 but realistically the MSR fits better with how much time I can play SC. I've never managed to have enough time to fill the whole of the MSR's cargo with refined goods. Best I've been able to do is about 105SCUs. Plus the MSR will open up data gameplay later but the C2 open up bulk trading so really torn on this one.
- Get a Vulture: melted my old Vulture when 3.18.1 came out with the scanner bug leaving me unable to find free floating panels. Love salvage enough to consider getting another Vulture for chilling.
- Get a Sabre/another small fighter: love the design of the Sabre but irked by its poor performance. Still might get it or another light/medium fighter to deal with smaller, faster targets in the early stages of bounty hunting.
- Finally, go big and get a Galaxy: again, love the look of the ship but not enticed by it being a concept for god know how many years later. Kind of interested in trying out the loaner Carrack though.
So those are what I'm thinking right now. I'm trying to cut down on spending on SC so the next move I take will be the last for the foreseeable future. Max I can do is the Galaxy.
If you have any advice or suggestions I'd love to hear it. Sorry for the long post. Cheers!

2023.06.06 03:10 Sharkbait3505 Interesting "Feature" I thought to share
Hello, I'm new to star citizen, having bought the drake cutter pledge during the free fly event, and have just recently got into ROC mining (for specifics I've been mining at Magda and using Everus Harbor to sell).
One interesting thing I noticed when selling a batch of gems was that I was getting aeuc for the batch, but it wasnt being removed for my cargo. I repeated this a few times and turned a ~150-200k thing of hadonite into almost a million.
I didn't know what was going on until I got the notification that the commodity prices were updated, whereafter it went through and removed the gems from the cargo. My guess is that, during the period where commodity prices are being updated, you can sell but it won't be removed from your inventory until it fully updates.
I plan to try and replicate this process and update here if it's something that can be replicated, and also to time out when prices update. If anyone has any further information about this, I'd love to know.

2023.06.06 02:55 blink85 TOTY Van Dijk or TOTSM Varane?
Never used either before, and can fit only 1 into my team. I play 352, with my LCB being FB Kimpembe and my RCB being TOTS Dias.
Which card is better? Varane looks to be better on paper but Van Dijk destroys me every time I come up against him.

2023.06.06 02:16 AutoModerator Cars, Trucks, Turbos... Oh My! part 8
Desperate Car Wife: A Journey in the Making (part.8)
While my posts might sound like I'm not a happy car wife, that is far from the truth... I really do enjoy all things cars, but I have my limits! In marriage you take the good with the bad. Sometimes I'm excited for my hubby and his new shiney parts, he adds to his Gracie, but there are other times when I'm like, "how much did 5 feet of 0 gauge wire cost again!!???", "you just bought a big battery.. why do you need another one???" His reasons, while laughable from my perspective, are necessary to the means of his OCD in car audio.
So who is Gracie??? Gracie is/was technically MY Grey '09 Tahoe. To take this back for a minute... over the past 26 years, my hubby has managed to take over every vehicle we've owned. Even to the likes of every single one had/has bass, a new deck, new mids/tweeters, Z type tires, sick a@@ rims, cherry bombs or flowmasters, LED lights, the whole works!!!.... I'm not trying to paint him in a bad light or anything of that nature. He just has to drive and tinker on anything and everything we own. It used to annoy me (especially in our 20s and most of our 30s), to the point, about 6 years ago I sold my car and refused to buy another for about a year and a half! I knew if I did, it wouldn't be "mine" for long..
At the time, I was a driver for a company that let me take the work van home; they allowed quick trips to the store (free advertising for them), so I didn't really need my own car... We had his 97 C/K 1500 Chevy to get around town in, so I was in no rush to buy. But then, right around the 2yr mark, I decided I was going to buy a car and kept telling my hub that he was NOT going to drive it or do anything to it!!! LOL Boy was I sooooo wrong.... I had originally decided to get a Dodge Charger, but then played it out in my head and was like "nope, nope, nope" this will only make him want my car, and I'd get stuck with the truck. I love and hate that truck as many of you know....
So I eventually settled for a beautiful grey 2009 Tahoe LS. I named her Gracie. I still had my work van, so for the first month after buying Gracie, I didn't drive her much. Well that, to my hubby meant, he would drive it!!! Lo and behold, my hubby took over Gracie and somehow she became HIS Tahoe..... in a matter of 2 months after buying her!!!!! and I was stuck with that godforsaken truck afterall!!!
He sure does love Gracie tho! He rather nobody, other than him, drive her too!! I'm the better, safer, cautious driver, yet he worries I'll hit a dagone pothole! Blahahahahahaha
He has slowly customized the body, restored the paint, lowered, sitting on some nice looking 22s, upgraded to disc brakes with bright green calipers, HID headlights, wrapped the front bow blue and the back bow gun metal black... She's puuuurrrrdy, I'll admit! He fully replaced the entire stereo system, a gazillion times over! Pulled the bench seat out to make room for his two 15" Sundowns mounted in a crazy big ported box... Added amps and crossovers galore, a bigger alternator, pro series batteries, lots of 0 gauge wires.... It's every car guys dream all in one :) He has so much love for Gracie, just like he did for that '72 Camaro years ago...
Fast forward 2 years.... I'm still complaining about losing Gracie to him. I really was mad! I tried to avoid the inevitable and it still happened! So I did what any other Desperate Car Wife would do... I had him go buy me a Tahoe! The only catch is I GET TO PICK IT OUT *OCD overload for him hahahaha* and it will be a boy name! HAHAHA jokes on him this time!!
To my amusement, he was totally down for it!!! I picked out a Black '11 LTZ with all the bells and whistles! His name is TEX.... He does drive Tex from time to time, and wishes his Gracie was an LTZ too now, but I think I finally met his match.... I can actually say this is MY TRUCK! FINALLY!!!!
To this day, he takes lots of pictures and shares them in his FB car groups... He's now a moderator for one of the groups and Gracie is the Star of the show!! He gets lots of looks while out driving and some have even pulled over to chat and check out Gracie...
Part. 9 coming soon
