2023.06.06 04:11 khoafraelich789 Here Are the 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy Right Now

📷
The days of the sub-$10,000 new car are long behind us, and the days of the sub-$20,000 new car may not be far behind. But if a rock-bottom base price is what you’re looking for, a variety of models still deserve consideration. Many of them also get good gas mileage, which will help keep a lid on ownership costs for as long as you own one.
To help with your cheap-car search, we rounded up the 10 least expensive new cars. They’re ordered by base price from least to most expensive, and all prices include the destination charge, but not any cash incentives or taxes and fees. To make the list useful to as many car shoppers as possible, all prices include an automatic transmission, which bumps the price for some models that otherwise offer a manual. For cars with more than one transmission choice, the EPA-estimated combined mpg rating is for the automatic version.
Cheapest New Cars
  1. 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage ES: $17,650
  2. 2023 Kia Rio LX: $17,875
  3. 2023 Nissan Versa S: $18,595
  4. 2023 Kia Forte LX: $20,815
  5. 2023 Hyundai Venue SE: $20,985
  6. 2023 Nissan Sentra S: $21,145
  7. 2023 Kia Soul LX: $21,215
  8. 2024 Chevrolet Trax LS: $21,495
  9. 2023 Hyundai Elantra SE: $22,065
  10. 2023 Subaru Impreza: $22,115
2023 Mitsubishi Mirage ES
Price: $17,650 (including $1,095 destination) Combined fuel economy: 39 mpg
📷
2022 Mitsubishi Mirage Manufacturer image
Topping the list of most affordable cars, the Mirage is a subcompact hatchback with seating for up to five. The combination of a tiny 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and optional continuously variable automatic transmission deliver impressive EPA-estimated gas mileage of 39 mpg combined, but it comes at the expense of performance; the Mirage is slow. That said, we thought it was reasonably fun to drive when we last reviewed it. In 2021, the Mirage got a refreshed face and revised rear bumper, an updated interior with new soft-touch materials, a new standard 7-inch touchscreen and standard safety features including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection across all trims. If you want a trunk, Mitsubishi also offers a sedan variant called the Mirage G4; with the CVT, it starts at $18,500.
2023 Kia Rio LX
Price: $17,875 ($1,125 destination) Combined fuel economy: 36 mpg
📷
2023 Kia Rio Manufacturer image
The Kia Rio enters the 2023 model year largely unchanged. Under the hood is a 120-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and standard CVT for a generous combined fuel economy rating of 36 mpg. An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia display with a rear camera and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard across the lineup; unfortunately, automatic emergency braking is unavailable until you move up to the Rio’s higher trim, the S.
2023 Nissan Versa S
Price: $18,595 ($1,095 destination) Combined fuel economy: 35 mpg
2023 Nissan Versa Manufacturer image
The Nissan Versa is packed with active-safety and driver-assist features you don’t often see at this price. These include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, reverse automatic braking, lane departure warning and high-beam assist. It’s also fitted with convenience features like cruise control, automatic headlights, push-button start and Bluetooth streaming audio. For 2023, the Versa gets an updated front end and adds optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the base S model. Under the hood of the Versa S is a 122-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an optional CVT; the CVT is standard on higher trims.
2023 Kia Forte LX
Price: $20,815 ($1,125 destination) Combined fuel economy: 34 mpg
📷
2022 Kia Forte Manufacturer image
The Kia Forte’s base LX model (formerly called the FE) returns for 2023 with no changes aside from the new name. The most affordable trim is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and mated to a CVT. The compact sedan offers a commuter-friendly 34 mpg combined and is loaded with standard features such as a large 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and automatic emergency braking. Although the Forte is a good value for a daily driver, shoppers looking for plentiful cargo space won’t find it in this sedan’s small trunk.
2023 Hyundai Venue SE
Price: $20,985 ($1,335 destination) Combined fuel economy: 31 mpg
📷
2023 Hyundai Venue Manufacturer image
The Hyundai Venue makes the cheapest cars roundup as a faux SUV (i.e., it looks like an SUV and Hyundai calls it that, too, but all-wheel drive is unavailable, so we’ll leave it off the category). Advanced standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, and a driver attention monitor. All models are equipped with 8-inch touchscreen displays with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; the base SE and mid-level SEL have wireless versions of both, too. Power for all versions of the Venue comes from a four-cylinder engine paired to a CVT. For 2023, the Venue gains a standard rear occupant alert system and a larger 4.2-inch instrument cluster.
2023 Nissan Sentra S
Price: $21,145 ($1,095 destination)
Combined fuel economy: 33 mpg
nissan-sentra-sr-2022-01-exterior-front-angle-sedan-white
2022 Nissan Sentra Car photo by Aaron Bragman
After a complete overhaul for 2020, the Sentra is more than just a bargain buy thanks to styling improvements and a tech-focused interior. Powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to a CVT, the Sentra S gets a combined fuel economy rating of 33 mpg. The compact sedan provides a controlled, comfortable ride with sharp steering, but the CVT lacks the giddy-up of those in some competitors. Standard on the S are a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite of advanced safety tech, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear automatic braking and rear cross-traffic alert.
2023 Kia Soul LX
Price: $21,215 ($1,325 destination) Combined fuel economy: 30 mpg
📷
2023 Kia Soul Manufacturer image
Kia’s quirky, utilitarian Soul hatchback sees a handful of changes for 2023, including an updated front and rear end, new 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, and a suite of standard safety and driver-assist features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure steering assist, driver attention warning, lane departure warning and a rear occupant alert. Power for all models comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT. The LX gets an 8-inch touchscreen display (other models get a 10.25-inch touchscreen) with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
2024 Chevrolet Trax LS
Price: $21,495 ($1,095 destination) Combined fuel economy: 30 mpg
📷
2024 Chevrolet Trax Manufacturer image
The redesigned 2024 Trax grows more spacious inside and gets a new turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine under the hood, which it shares with the larger Chevy Trailblazer and related Buick Encore GX. But while the Trailblazer and Encore GX offer available AWD and make our list of cheapest SUVs, the Trax is now FWD-only. The Trax’s tech upgrades include a larger 8-inch center touchscreen and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity; it also adds standard Chevy Safety Assist, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure steering assist with lane departure warning, and forward collision alert.
2023 Hyundai Elantra SE
Price: $22,065 ($1,115 destination) Combined fuel economy: 37 mpg
📷
2022 Hyundai Elantra Manufacturer image
Car shoppers on a tight budget will be happy to learn that Hyundai completely redesigned the Elantra for the 2021 model year with a more refined powertrain and a larger interior, and the 2023 model returns largely unchanged. The Elantra is available only as a sedan, and the most affordable SE trim is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a capable CVT. The Elantra gets an impressive 37 mpg that makes it as budget-friendly to own as it is to buy, and standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a blind spot warning system and lane-centering steering. Shoppers who can overlook the sedan’s low-rent interior will appreciate the Elantra’s value.
2023 Subaru Impreza Base
Price: $22,115 ($1,020 destination) Combined fuel economy: 32 mpg
📷
2023 Subaru Impreza hatchback and sedan Manufacturer image
The 2023 Subaru Impreza offers the choice of a sedan or five-door hatchback variant, and the sedan brings the lower price tag of the pair. Under the hood is a 152-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an optional CVT that is good for an EPA-rated 32 mpg; AWD comes standard across all trims. On the tech front, the base Impreza’s center touchscreen measures 6.5 inches and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Models equipped with the CVT also pack important standard safety and driver-assist features: In addition to a rear seat reminder, Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite bundles automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and lane departure steering assist.

2023.06.06 03:45 Mister_Way The Higher Self and the Enneagram

The higher self – this is an ancient concept, and it is found throughout human spirituality, religion, philosophy, and culture. But, what is it, and more importantly, “why are you talking about it in enneagram?”
The higher self is not something that you have to imagine; you can easily observe it in yourself. The higher self is most easily described first in relation to the lower selves, as they are far more immediately accessible, and together they comprise the higher self. You know them well, and talk about them regularly.
You might say, “I was thinking…” referring to the thoughts you were having. But, aren’t you your thoughts? What is this “I” that was having a thought? It is the higher self, observing the lower self known as “the Head.”
Alternatively, perhaps you will say “I was hungry.” Who is it, exactly that experiences hunger? It is the higher self, who observes hunger, and all the senses and sensations, which are the “thoughts” of the lower self known as “the Gut.”
And, of course, you might say “I felt [an emotion],” which is the higher self experiencing the lower self known as “the Heart.”
Each of these lower selves is a processing center designed to serve the higher self, which is supposed to be making intelligent decisions by examining all of their various outputs and weighing them appropriately in an integrated, intentional examination.
Each of these three lower selves has three modes it can operate under:
The Heart center has three settings. It can be set to any of these modes of processing:
2 - What should be felt
3 - What others feel
4 - What you feel
The Head center has three settings. It can be set to any of these modes of processing:
5 - What you think
6 - What should be thought
7 - What others think
The gut center has three settings. It can be set to any of these modes of processing.
8 - What you want to do
9 - What others want to do
1 - What should be done
The higher self can turn any of these on at any time, but the higher self tends to fall asleep and allow things to run on autopilot. This is why the first step to achieving any kind of growth is increasing the proportion of the time that you are self-aware, particularly in moments of stress, instead of acting on auto-pilot. Only when the higher self is active can you do anything but what you’ll always automatically do.
What is it that you always automatically do? It’s not a simple list of things, although it can sometimes appear to be that way if your situation remains consistent over a long period. But, what is happening is that while the higher self sleeps, one of the lower selves takes up position as the de facto “higher self,” and it just dominates all of your processing and experience at the expense of the rest of the lower selves.
The lower selves have the potential to work in an integrated way, all together in harmony, under the direction of the higher self, but they don’t just automatically do so as a natural part of human development. In the ordinary course of human development, the higher self does not recognize its responsibility, and simply watches as the lower selves compete for attention and control, with one center taking over broadly, and each center being dominated by one of its three modes.(this is the reason for tritype being a thing).
The de facto “higher self” cannot adequately replace the true higher self. When the de facto “higher self” tries to consider the inputs from the other lower selves, it cannot help but bias itself against them and in favor of its own output, particularly with regard to the other two in its own center. It also lacks the authority to command the other centers to allocate appropriate distributions of resources to each of their three functions, so it gets skewed inputs from the others, in addition to already being biased in evaluating them.
The degree to which the higher self has abdicated to the de facto “higher self” is measured on the scale of the “levels of health.” The more power and control the de facto “higher self” has been given, the greater the compulsive bias toward that mode the person displays in their being. This is why the less healthy a person is, the more unreasonably “their type” they become, whereas the healthier a person becomes, the more balanced and reasonable they become. It is also why in unhealthy states, a person can behave erratically, as lower selves wrest control for short periods when their concerns have been ignored for too long. It so happens that each type tends to cause a crisis for the lower self which is its “direction of disintegration,” and its wings, such that these are what will most likely be which one takes over when the core type’s lower self is screwing up too much as de facto “higher self.” They don’t do a better job taken alone, but they can, with a little luck, balance out a lot of the extremes and often can maintain a chaotic, disjointed, sometimes self-sabotaging equilibrium.
In contrast, at the highest levels of integration, all of the lower selves are being engaged and considered appropriately and cohesively, so all of the types begin to resemble each other – it is the return to the essence that all humans share – all of the potentials and possibilities of each personality type united within a single individual. When a person has fully integrated, they no longer have any type at all. They are all of the types simultaneously, with the right one in conscious focus at every appropriate moment. Such levels of integration appear godlike to us ordinary people, and indeed, centuries pass between individuals who appear to have achieved them, and their influence is felt throughout the intervening years, and far beyond.
But, though it is unrealistic that we all aspire to be as gods among men, for us mere mortals, this at least provides the path of growth and development which will take us toward those paragons of humanity. It makes it possible to comprehend how it is that such great people as have existed share a species with the rest of us, and how we can become more like them.
What are we to do? Know thyself, not once, not sometimes, but always. Do not fall into auto-pilot, but be present in every moment, choosing always deliberately and with awareness what you are processing and doing. This comes first. From there, all possibilities become potentials, and any potential you choose may become reality. This is the purpose of the enneagram: not mere classification, not mere self-knowledge, but ascension to one’s full potential – the potential we all share, each with our own classified path to find our way to. Learning about the enneagram is about awakening the higher self, developing the soul.
Your higher self is asleep, parked in your “core type.” As it wakes up more and more frequently, you become increasingly free to experience all of the other types that are part of your essential humanity, and to engage them properly with their place in your life, and more importantly, you will be capable of higher levels of processing that are unavailable to the individual lower selves. The higher self is greater than the sum of its parts, as it can provide an integrated consideration of all aspects of all things. This cognitive superpower is the birthright of all people, theoretically free to be claimed by any who will seek it persistently.
But– there’s the catch-22. Until you already sought out your birthright, which grants true persistence, how will you do anything with true persistence, such as seek it out? The lower selves forget the higher purposes, so if the higher self is sleeping, who will be awake to awaken it to the task of awakening?

Autoprobe for WCS alignment
I have a problem that I'm not sure how to correct. I have a part that gets counterbored on the corner holes for a nylock nut, the problem I'm having is when I run the part in the mill it seems like the holes were shifted diagonally in the XY plane about a .06.
Now, my question is, is there a way to still bore probe the center for WCS, but use a secondary auto probe location to triangulate the part to account for any shift in the part? If so, how you do dat?
Machine is a 2016 HAAS VF-4. I have the paid version of F360, but not the manufacturing extension. (Trying to make the inital investment of my workstation and F360 back before I fork out another $1200)

Show:
I was busted by the light police. They had a point, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post.
Dana Milbank purchased a home in, soon to be not, rural Virginia. At night he kept the formerly vacant property lit to the degree that spurned one commentator to call it “spaceship lighting.”
Milbank recaps being visited by the “light police,” a group of concerned citizens who help educate neighbors and instill a sense of pride in the brilliance of their starry night skies.
At first, he was taken aback, but later, not only did he appreciate their efforts, but he also converted his blinding always on, white light flood lights to warm 2700 Kelvin motion sensing lights.
Per Ruskin Hartley, executive director of the International Dark Sky Association, “for 4.5 billion years there was no artificial light at night. It’s really only in the last five human generations that we transformed that. It’s one of the most profound transformations of our environment.”
Many of you may recall an earlier story, way back in our Hormone of Darkness episode, showcasing concerns by local residents prior to a 760 house (now 761) plus town center development moving into the Culpepper County, VA area. Per the Rappahannock News, this development features “a resort style swimming pool, clubhouse, tot lot, and multiple sports fields and sports courts, all connected by a network of biking and walking trails.”
The forgotten medieval habit of ‘two sleeps’ by Zaria Gorvett of the BBC.
Gorvett opened my eyes to something I never knew about, the medieval custom of two sleeps. For those of you unaware, two sleeps are exactly what it sounds like.
Folks would partake in a communal nap, complete with rigid sleeping arrangement conventions, between 9 – 11pm, then awaken for a few hours to do everything from hang out to brew beer! In fact, the idea of multiple sleeps crossed cultures and was found in places as far from Europe as indigenous South America.
How can one’s circadian rhythm make sense of all of this?!
Well, for starters, until the invention of the alarm clock, which humorously was invented by a clocks salesman so he could wake up and sell more clocks, people had no firm way to wake up at a consistent time. The industrial revolution enforced a new circadian standard.
And there’s some science behind this! In the 1992 study, In Short Photoperiods, human sleep is biphasic, researcher Thomas Wehr found that after four weeks of 10 hour days, his subjects began to engage in this two sleep cycle, involving a one to three hour period for which they became awake and engaged in between.
Want to Learn About Light Pollution? There’s a mini-course for that!, Jennifer Sensiba of Clean Technica.
Quoting Sensiba, “As I got older, I traveled a lot more and saw the problem more for what it is. Not only did I see that in many places there is no refuge from it, but I also saw that it was slowly growing worse. Places that had been dark 30 years ago had more and more light creeping upon the horizon.”
If you’re interested in learning more, or more importantly, know someone who might benefit from learning more, Sensiba links up to an International Dark Sky Mini-Course on light pollution, call it Light Pollution 101!
There’s a Play Date at the National Museum of Natural History: Lights Out exhibit!
But unfortunately, by the time you listen to this, and hell, by the time we talk about this, it has passed.
Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan. Sarah Parlette for Click on Detroit.
Evidently gambling websites have decided to honor April’s International Dark Sky week in a strange new content marketing campaign, which was to rank the best places in each state to see sunrises and sunsets. My favorite one, “Ann Arbor named best place for sunrises, sunsets in Michigan,” comes from Click on Detroit, whereby a quote “study” examined Michigan’s most populated cities.”
According to Click on Detroit, “to celebrate International Astrology Day on Saturday, staff at Great Lake Stakes, a Michigan online gambling news site, looked at light pollution in the five most populated cities around the Mitten state to determine which offers the best views every morning and evening.”
Star bathing is the new outdoor travel trend we should all be trying for Summer 2023, according to Amy Beecham at Stylist.
Evidently, as an attempt to destress and promote mindfulness, romanticism about sleeping under the stars has birthed a 70% increase in searches for the term ‘star bathing’ on Hipcamp. And to be sure, “Hipcamp recommends checking a stargazing calendar which outlines major astrological events – like supermoons, pink moons, and star showers.”
Industry Must Face an Inconvenient Truth — Most LED Lights at Night are Unhealthy
Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, a circadian clock expert, recently published an article in LEDs Magazine chastising the lighting industry for not recognizing and reigning in the negative externalities of its products. Per the piece, such effects are, obesity, diabetes, depression, cancer, and more.
He cites three categories of industry responses, making the correlation that long term Denial or outright Ignorance of the Facts, may result in “asbestos-scale liabilities or draconian regulations.”
Per the piece, a recent survey by the Circadian Light Research Center of 2,697 peer reviewed scientific articles confirmed that human circadian clocks are highly sensitive to blue wavelengths, and that exposure to such wavelengths leads to major health disorders.
Moore-Ede calls for the industry to harvest the “commercial opportunity” to greatly limit future liability by creating and managing its own standards for circadian modulated lighting.
Unpacking the Wallpack, by Dan Weissman in LD+A Magazine.
Weissman, who recently purchased a telescope for his family in Cambridge, MA, discovered that the scope could only afford him views of some solar system objects and a few brightly burning stars.
The ire of Weissman’s pen takes the shape of a rectangular fixtures, be it box like or simply a panel these days, that typically hang off the side of an exterior wall or above an exterior door. “Devoid of aesthetic value” this light is often put up under the “pretense of security and safety” by “recommended practices and adopted municipal codes.”
Weissman recognizes labels that often accompany, what he calls, “Glare bombs,” including “contractor-select,” “energy efficient,” or “light pollution friendly.”
Further, per an earlier LD+A article, such lighting driven by its extreme contrasts is exceedingly common in minority communities where light is weaponized as a tool of power. It becomes a “device of alienation, creating a zone of control and separation.”
Weissman recognizes that the true reason such fixtures are selected often comes down to cost. He recognizes that it may take equally as much cost to persuade building and homeowners away from such lighting into the realm of more responsible, lower lumen, shielded lighting.
Weissman calls for producers of these glare bombs to be labeled as polluters, putting them in line with fossil fuel manufacturers and PFAS makers.
Songbirds, dusk and clear skies: Scientists explore migratory flights, by Erin Blakemore.
Bird migration season is ending here in the Mid-Atlantic. I was lucky enough to catch several Baltimore Orioles and Indigo Buntings last week. Researchers looked at 400 songbirds from 9 major species, “including the yellow-rump warbler, American redstart and Bicknell’s thrush.”
The question they hoped to answer was how are these birds so darn precise in identifying the best time to take off for their nightly migration? Scientists found that 90% of the migrating birds in the study took off within 69 minutes of dusk. A “much narrower takeoff window,” that even shocked the research team!
Per the study, taking off at night is all about maximum flight time. In addition to being able to precisely schedule their take offs, a feat that every airline I’ve flown with over the past few years has proven inept at, birds also are apparently good meteorologists! They often depart when the atmospheric pressure rises over a day’s span. Other factors also trigger migration, including sex, age, and celestial cues.
‘Lights Out’ initiative appears to be saving birds from crashing into Philly buildings by Sophia Schmidt.
Preliminary results indicate that bird death counts are down 70% at one Market Street tower, since it began its participation in Lights Out. As we spoke about on a previous show, birds utilize the stars to navigate, but city lights can disorient the birds. Combine the lights with reflective or transparent glass, and that spells fatal trouble for our migrating warblers!
Per Keith Russell, a program manager for urban conservation with Audubon Mid-Atlantic, “We’ve lost almost a third of our birds – and [collisions] contributing to that. If we’re going to want to preserve the bird populations here in North America, we have to look at these types of problems. And this is a preventable one.”
The Knoxville, TN Zoo is offering up what they call “Twilight Tours” per WVLT 8. Each event will feature a guide to showcase nocturnal critters.
I did something similar in Singapore years ago. The zoo had very dim lights in the exhibits – and they kept those lights dim as you walked so that you didn’t lose your night vision. It was a very different and, might I say, peaceful experience than the typically chaotic daytime zoo.
Flashlights posing major threat to nesting sea turtles. Fox35 Orlando
Apparently, a single flashlight can deter female sea turtles from coming onto a beach and nesting. Florida, as I did not know, is home to 90% of the sea turtle nests across the world, so losing sea turtles can affect the global ecosystem.
One visitor to Cocoa Beach stated, “Just leave them alone. Stand back and look. You don’t need a flashlight.”
Another, “It’s not super surprising because more buildings go up, more technology. As it increases, nature and stuff like that decreases,” said Zoe Jovaag, whose grandfather used to take her on walks to see sea turtles.
Capture the Dark 2023 officially is under way!
The International Dark Sky Association opens up its annual photo contest complete with prizes across eight categories and an additional People’s Choice category. Voting begins on July 3rd, entries must be received by June 30th.
City Tests Traffic Light That Only Turns Green for Drivers Who Obey the Speed Limit. Erin Marquis for Jalopnik.
And hey, you better not speed in Brossard, Quebec….otherwise you may be waiting around for a while. Brossard is testing out a new traffic light that will stay red until it senses oncoming traffic. However, it will only change to green if the car is going the speed limit. Per the Jalopnik article, “FRED [the French acronym for “educational traffic calming light] forces fast drivers to stop and gives them a chance to reconsider their life choices.” Such lights are already used in Europe, but this will be the first for the Great White North.
Why the Greatest Threat to Star-Gazing Isn’t Light Pollution, and this comes to us from Dorin Elin Urrutia at Inverse.
Elin Urrutia writes, in her compelling piece, that the greatest threat to star-gazing is actually the weather. Citing notable examples of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia (which burnt down due to bushfires) and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (which sustained structural damage following the winds of Hurricane Maria).
While the threat of human-caused climate change has presented new challenges, Elin Urrutia references proactive burns that saved Los Angeles’ Mount Wilson Observatory from flames in 2020.
On a similar note, ABC News (the Australian Broadcasting Company, not to be confused with the American Broadcasting Company), brings us “A World Without Darkness Could Be a Reality within a Few Years.”
Per Carol Redford of Astrotourism Western Australia, “There are some people in the world now who don’t actually experience darkness anymore. They’re in a city like Beijing, Toyoko, or London. In all those big cities, it’s never dark, it’s always light. During the day of course with the sun, but then during the night with all of the artificial light. They’re not experiencing darkness, and definitely not seeing those beautiful stars…”
In the 66 years since the implementation of the UN Convention on the Peaceful Use of Outerspace, around 11,000 satellites orbit the Earth. But it’s about to get wayyy busier. Driven by innovations that have led to dramatic reductions in costs, over the next ten years, Per attorney Steven Freeland, it’s anticipated that somewhere between 100,000 to 500,000 objects will be sent up. Let me pause on that for a second.
On the travel front, we stay in the land down under, “Aussie region determined to keep its darkness is a stargazer’s dream” by Chantelle Francis of News.com.AU.
The town of Swam Reach, population 270, resides in a 3200sq km region of Southern Australia that received its International Dark Sky Reserve status over three years ago. On a scale of darkness between 0 – 22, the River Murray Dark Sky Reserve at Swam Reach, measures in at a whopping 21.9!
Tourism has become a growing business. The reserve hosts numerous telescope pads and offers tours of the night sky. There’s hope that an observatory and/or planetarium may also arrive in due course.
Best smart lights for outdoors in 2023, Brittney Vincent of CBS Essentials.
Oh there’s a lot not to love here, but it does fall in line with last month’s ‘Lumens are Coming’ article.
For those of you who feel the need to light your trees, because for some reason they need light at night I guess…I’ll try and pretend it’s not solely for ostentatious and narcissistic reasons. By the way, does anyone remember when those were negative characteristics?
The article features spotlights that can be programmed to over 16 MILLION colors including…lucky for us, ALL shades of white….which you can also do for a 500 lumen flood light set.
And hey, Ring now has solar path lighting. Don’t worry though, the fixtures themselves put out up to 80 lumens of sideways light.
You know, it’s astounding when you look at some of these pictures. The amount of redundant lighting. It honestly makes no sense to me. You have a porch light, which lights up the path. Path lighting, which lights up the path. And, in the one picture, god awful frontward facing flood lights, which also light up the path. How bright do you need these paths!? I digress. But the lumens are indeed coming.
LDS Church will get to light up its Heber Valley Temple after all, but the faith didn’t get everything it wanted, Blake Apgar of the Salt Lake Tribune.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fought hard to rid itself of any nighttime lighting responsibility by pressuring Wasatch County, Utah officials to approve new lighting rules that would enable the church to light a proposed new temple the same way it does for every other temple.
The Church received permission to uplight the temple, enabling an exception to be made in Wasatch’s rather stringent nighttime lighting rulebook. However, the temple will be restricted by the level of lumens it can use, and it must have exterior lighting turned off an hour after sunset or an hour after normal business hours.
Smart Street Lights Market is Expected to Hit USD 14,751.1 million at a 23.4% CAGR by 2030, Market Research Future Press Release
The pandemic is officially over, smart street lighting is about to boom. Combine the rush to LED fixtures with the Internet of Things, and expect to see street lights moonlighting as traffic and parking monitors, air quality meters, and more. Not to mention, “it is anticipated that camera-connected smart street lighting will increase road safety by lowering the likelihood of accidents and criminality.”
Texas now has 7 dark sky communities for spectacular star gazing, Sana Ameer, MRT.
Let’s cheer on the city of Bee Cave, everyone! Bee Cave joins a growing list of dark sky places already in the Lone Star State, including 2 Dark Sky Sanctuaries, 5 Dark Sky Parks, and 1 Dark Sky Reserve. Nighttime is alive and well in some parts of Texas!
Our Afraid of the Dark article is a bit scary! Hilton Head’s dark roads and pedestrians are deadly combo. What the town is doing about it, Blake Douglas at The Island Packet.
Per the article, 9 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities occurred since 2018, with five occurring after dark. Prior to that period, there were 28 recorded deaths from 2000 – 2016, with 20 of them taking place after dark.
In 2018, an 11 year old resident was struck and killed while walking her dog across an intersection one night. Lighting advocates began taking shape in what otherwise is a very conservation focused island. Hilton Head, SC has a limited number of street lights, priding itself on “avoiding light pollution and blending nature with construction.”
Lighting advocates appear to be, at the very least, asking for flashing crosswalk lights on the island to indicate when an individual is crossing.
It should be noted that the article shows a chart of 9 after-dark-deaths since 2014, only two of them occurred at crosswalks. In fact, during the same time frame, 6 additional deaths occurred at crosswalks during the daytime.
As a whole, the National Safety Council reports that 74.5% of pedestrian deaths occurred at night, whereby 39.1% took place in lit areas and 35.38% took place in unlit areas.
Bryan Bloch, an auto safety expert, surmises that car companies bear some of the blame – producing cheap or ineffectual headlight fixtures, and drivers themselves, who don’t realize that they need to regularly clean their headlight lenses.
Despite opposition from residents, it appears that Hilton Head will be receiving lights at two new intersections and possibly more depending on engineering studies currently in progress.
Is lighting the key variable here? Is more light going to solve pedestrian deaths?
Our featured research article of the month comes to us from Animal Conservation, “Manipulating spectra of artificial light affects movement patterns of bats along ecological corridors.”
Bats are already known to have a wide range of responses to artificial light at night (also known as ALAN). Fast flying species tend to be more opportunistic in the presence of ALAN while slower ones tend to be more light averse. We know that “long wavelengths and reduced intensity” can minimize their environmental effects on bats. It’s not unheard of for bats to travel upwards of “tens of km per night.” Furthermore, bats are very dependent on the landscape and the structures within those landscapes.
Despite the nuances between species, the consensus is that ALAN, especially high intensity ALAN, negatively affects bats. This study attempted to answer what exactly bats do when they encounter ALAN – how do they react depending on different types of ALAN.
The study used three different light fixtures – one green, one red, and one white. The control was devoid of light fixtures. The researchers attempted to ascertain the behavior of bats as they encountered lights adjacent to woody areas. The researchers looked at three different bat groupings based on their foraging-echo location behavior, that being one of open field foraging, forest edge foraging, and narrow space – or more aptly forest foragers.
Researchers found that open and edge foraging bats increased their activity close to white and green lights, and to a lesser extent red lights. However, narrow space bats were more likely to veer away from all colors of lighting. Edge foragers were also less likely to cross a white light.
The positive effects of white and green light on open and edge foraging bats appear to be attributed to the accumulation of insects around light sources containing more blue light.
The nighttime sky over Oahu will be lit up with green lasers in the coming days. Here’s why. Hawaii News Now
Before we close up today, do you live in Hawaii? I know I wish I did!
If so, do you recall seeing green lasers streak across the night sky? Well, the Army Corps of Engineers was using lidar at night to complete a coastal mapping survey.
Why did they survey at night? Specifically, why did they do this between midnight to 5am? Simply b/c the airspace is so busy, that time was the only chance they had to complete the survey. The remaining survey was completed during daytime hours.

2023.06.05 23:51 mattyp2109 Which component makes the Selector Switch lock into place?

My M4’s selector switch is a bit too easy to bring past semi and get bumped into full auto or safety and will really only be lined up with semi if I make a point of putting it dead center.
Would replacing the selector switch or the selector plate be a solution for a snappy, clicky, locked in feel?

So far it’s as boring as the presentation. But I have found a few things they didn’t mention.
When in private browsing mode on safari it will lock when you leave it. Needing FaceID to then open it again.
You can resize the clock on the lock screen but that’s about it.
Standby does work when the iPhone is plugged in and auto lock is off. So just plug it in tilt it and boom enjoy.
Autocorrect is actually pretty damn good now. It’s “Ducking” amazing.
Control center has added one small thing being you can now add “ping your watch”
Interactive widgets works as intended
Contact editing is more fun and more useful now than it was before.
I’ve logged how I’ve felt multiple times but it’s currently not working for me in the health app. Could be different for other people.
That’s about all I’ve found for now.

2023.06.05 23:35 adventurepaul What's new in e-commerce? - Week of June 5th, 2023

Hi ShopifyeCommerce - I'm Paul and I follow the e-commerce industry closely for my Shopifreaks E-commerce Newsletter. Each week I post a summary recap of this week's top stories, which I cover in depth in the newsletter. .
  1. STAT OF THE WEEK: Apple's App Store ecosystem generated $1.1 trillion in revenue in 2022. 90% was commission-free and the remainder Apple took a 15% to 30% commission. This $1.1 trillion breaks down as $910 billion in total billings and sales from the sale of physical goods and services, $109 billion from in-app advertising and $104 billion for digital goods and services. .
  2. Shopify officially launched Shop Cash, its rewards program that earns shoppers 1% cashback on purchases made using the Shop Pay payment method. After a purchase, shoppers will see their Shop Cash rewards balance appear in their Shop App. The rewards are redeemable for future purchases within Shop App, currently just for customers and stores in the U.S. Shop Cash redemption is not limited to JUST the store that a customer purchased from. The rewards are tied to the payment method (Shop Pay), not to the store itself, and can be used on any U.S. store within the Shopify ecosystem. .
  3. Last week Reddit announced a significant increase to its API pricing, which will inevitably put most 3rd party apps out of business. Other apps affected by the pricing change include Reddit is Fun (my personal favorite), Relay for Reddit, Bacon Reader, and more. Additionally, under the new API rules, developers of third-party clients won’t be able to earn money from ads or be able to show NSFW content within their apps. Their only option for monetization will be to hope that users are willing to pay a monthly subscription to their app, despite not getting access to some of Reddit's content. Moderators wrote an open letter to Reddit management, urging them to reconsider the recent API pricing change, which has been signed by thousands of users and moderators and shared across hundreds of subreddits. Many subreddits are planning to go dark on June 12th for 48 hours or longer (some permanently) to protest the policy — which means turning their subreddit private and not making its content available to the public. .
  4. Walmart announced its initiatives to reduce its use of plastic in its online business and reduce waste, plans which include replacing nearly all its plastic mailers with paper mailers, "rightsizing" its cardboard box packaging to reduce packing waste, giving customers the ability to request consolidation of multiple items into fewer boxes, and later this year giving customers the ability to opt-out of single use plastic bags used in online pick-up orders across the U.S. Amazon has offered similar shipment consolidation features for quite some time, including allowing users choose an Amazon Day, where members pick a day of the week to have all their items delivered at once. .
  5. Amazon is making a big change at its warehouses to ensure that customers receive products in good condition. The company will soon begin employing AI to check items before they are shipped to ensure that they are of good quality before leaving the facility. The AI inspection happens during the picking and packing stage. As items are selected and put into bins for orders, they go through an imaging station where they are checked for accuracy. If an item is flagged as damaged, a human worker takes a closer look. Otherwise, it moves on to the packing stage and gets shipped to the customer. The AI system is reportedly three times better than a human worker at identifying damaged items, and it never has to use the bathroom. .
  6. India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has expanded to facilitate B2B transactions. The B2B transactions on ONDC are being powered by tech startups SignCatch, a SaaS payments startup, and Rapidor, a business automation platform, which have jointly enabled both the B2B buyer and seller side platforms on the network, allowing interoperability between both sides The ONDC team said it has other startups in the pipeline for its B2B expansion, including the rural fintech company Spice Money. .
  7. Shopify is facing a $130M class-action lawsuit over severance offered to recently laid off staff. The lawsuit alleges that some Shopify employees laid off at the start of May were presented with departure packages outlining hefty severance sums they were entitled to if they signed the agreement within a few days. However once workers signed the agreements, Shopify changed the terms and the employees were given substantially smaller sums. .
  8. Twitter is also being sued by former employees — this time by former janitors from its New York City offices. The suit alleges that Twitter violated city law when janitors were abruptly fired in December after the Elon Musk takeover, violating the Displaced Building Service Workers Protection Act by failing to retain the janitors after terminating the contract. The lawsuit is seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in back wages for the former workers. .
  9. Amazon, along with four other companies selected, built a prototype for the digital euro's application in e-commerce payments, after the ECB called on front-end providers in the EU payment market to contribute ideas and build applications. Amazon is also optimistic about the project and welcomes the introduction of the digital euro. The company said, “We at Amazon believe a digital euro can be a tool to foster innovation and increase the efficiency of payments.” The European Commission is due to publish a bill in June that covers digital euro privacy safeguards and other major issues. .
  10. ShipStation released a study that reveals the factors that deter e-commerce customers. The “Exploring the Nuances in E-Commerce” guide includes a survey of over 3,000 customers and 600 online merchants across six markets, and examines the deterrents of consumer loyalty in e-commerce. 90% of Australian consumers state that a lack of suitable delivery options can influence whether they abandon their cart at the online checkout. 30% indicate they will often or always abandon their cart if their desired delivery option is not offered. However merchants seem to be ignorant to the above stats. 38% of Australian merchants believe a lack of delivery options offered at the checkout ‘never’ prevents consumers from finalizing their purchase. >
  11. Etsy announced an update to its listing process for sellers to add new listings or edit existing ones. With the new listings form, sellers can navigate sections faster and more efficiently, access the new performance tab to see performance data and reviews for the listing, and keep track of edits via a change summary in the footer. .
  12. Last week approximately 2,000 Amazon employees staged a walkout to protest Amazon corporate's decision to bring employees back into the office, and Amazon couldn't have cared less. Company spokesperson Brad Glasser told Fortune, that since the return-to-office mandate went into effect “there’s more energy, collaboration, and connections happening, and we’ve heard this from lots of employees and the businesses that surround our offices.” .
  13. A husband-and-wife team of eBay sellers put bubble wrap companies to the test to find out whether the sizing on their labels were accurate. One brand which advertised 700 feet on the label only shipped around 400 feet, while the best experience was from a 1050 feet role delivering 1020 feet. .
  14. Wix issued its second Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report, which demonstrates the company's efforts towards building a more sustainable and inclusive business and shares new initiatives to its approach to a responsible ESG framework. Co-founder and CEO, Avishai Abrahami, said, “We're here to make a difference and, ultimately, create a better world for everyone, and with today's decisions we're solidifying our foundation – for our users, our people and our company – for the next decade of success for Wix.” .
  15. Walmart added the ability for sellers to purchase shipping labels for domestic orders on its marketplace, a feature that was previously only available on cross-border orders. Walmart also announced Automated Shipping Settings, which automatically generates transit times based on your warehouse zip code, carrier service, and customer's address. .
  16. Moneris, a Canadian provider of payment solutions for mobile, online, and brick-and-mortar businesses, partnered with Wix to power its in-house website builder. Businesses using Moneris Online will have access to Wix's product offerings including bookings, online ordering, commerce and business solutions, and security infrastructure. .
  17. Amazon plans to hire 1,000 seasonal workers across Australia in preparation for its busy mid-year sales period. The company has opened applications for temporary roles at fulfillment centers and logistics sites across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide in an attempt to get ahead of the holiday season rush. .
  18. Binance is rumored to be laying off as much as 20% of its 8,000 employee workforce, according to a tweet by independent reporter Colin Wu. A company spokesperson responded with a statement saying that “this not a case of rightsizing” but a focus on “whether we have the right talent”, as the company says it'll still be seeking to fill hundreds of open roles. .
  19. Shein is hiring a U.S. head of logistics who will serve as a liaison between the company's U.S. and Singapore headquarters, according to a LinkedIn job posting, as part of its plan to bolster compliance and logistics execs ahead of its U.S. marketplace. The company is also hiring an anti-money laundering and compliance executive and a number of U.S. marketplace personnel. .
  20. commercetools, a provider of composable commerce, appointed Roxana Dobrescu as its first Chief People Officer. Dobrescu, who brings two decades of corporate human resources and talent acquisition experience to the company, will lead global personnel efforts. .
  21. Companies are pulling back on their fulfillment plans including American Eagle, who announced last year that it was building out 3PL capabilities after acquiring two logistics firms, however recently trimmed its logistics workforce, stating that the unit's services had not met expectations. Blue Apron, another example, opened two distribution centers and added 1,200 workers to assemble its boxes of fresh goods, but are now selling its logistics assets to FreshRealm, which makes meal kits for Kroger, Publix, Walmart, and other grocers. .
  22. Meesho, the Facebook-backed Indian e-commerce marketplace that offers the lowest seller commission in the country, has become the world's fastest shopping app to cross 500M downloads across Google Play and iOS, reaching the milestone in just six years. Over half of those downloads (274M) came in 2022. .
  23. Amazon is in talks with all major U.S. wireless carriers about a potential partnership to offer cheap or free cell phone service to Prime members. So far there are no details on what Amazon's wireless service would look like, including whether it would offer the same level of service or Internet speeds as you'd get going directly through Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T. .
  24. Twitter is hiring NBCUniversal's senior executive Joe Benarroch in a role focusing on business operations. At NBCUniversal, Benarroch was executive VP of communications, global advertising and partnerships. .
  25. Molson Hart, a reporter who famously wrote about how Amazon's business practices harm American consumers in 2019, shared on Twitter that Amazon lawyers “are trying to ruin me.” In an attempt to prove that Molson is either lying or wrong, the company has requested countless documents in discovery and requested more than two full days of depositions from the reporter, while putting him in a position to cover a mountain legal bills through 2026. .
  26. Last week I reported that Jeff Bezos is ripped now. Well it turns out that Mark Zuckerberg is too! The Meta CEO impressed his followers by completing the Murph challenge, which involves running one mile, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and concluding with another mile run, while wearing a 20lb weighted pack, in under 40 minutes. .
  27. Amazon is winding down its celebrity voices initiative on Echo devices, which included voices from Samuel L. Jackson, Melissa McCarthy, and Shaquille O'Neal. Customers will be able to continue using the voices for a limited time and then can contact Amazon for a refund. .
  28. Juni is launching a new feature called Juni Invoices, which offers a “buy media, pay later” model that allows online retailers to choose between 30, 60, and 90 days to pay their media invoices. The platform will auto-collect and scan invoices via integration with Google and Facebook Ads and automatically match each invoice with its corresponding transaction to reduce processing time. .
  29. Google made several updates to Google Wallet, focusing on health care and travel services, with potential use cases for personal identification and airline boarding. The upgrades arrive to compete with Apple Pay, which began offering consumers a hub for their virtual payments cards along with authentication services. 2023.06.05 23:32 adventurepaul E-commerce Industry News - Week of June 5th, 2023

Hi ecommerce - I'm Paul and I follow the e-commerce industry pretty closely for my Shopifreaks E-commerce Newsletter.
Now how about offering a 4.15% interest bearing savings account? .
  30. Meta is planning to cut another 1,200 jobs across California, with 528 coming from the company's Menlo Park headquarters. The company also announced that it will require office-assigned staff to return to in-person work for at least three days a week starting Sep 5th. .
  31. Klaviyo launched an integration with Amazon's Buy With Prime service, which lets Klaviyo users sync their order and customer data with their Klaviyo account. Business are able to see a single, real-time view of their customers, conversions, and revenue through Klaviyo's platform. .
  32. Plus 8 seed rounds, IPOs, and aquisitions of interest including SellerX's acquisition of fellow e-commerce aggregator Elevate Brands.
I hope you found this recap helpful. See you next week! (Unless ecommerce is dark in protest of the Reddit API changes. In that case, I'll see ya when I see ya!)
